Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach Ice Dogs (1-1) had their fortune reversed on them Friday night, falling to the Idaho Steelheads (1-1) by the same score they beat them by Wednesday, 3-2. Despite playing back at the Long Beach Arena and a chance to take a commanding 2-0 series lead, the Ice Dogs always seemed to be a step behind the defending champs.

Long Beach struck first, just 1:25 into the game, when Michael Lambert scored his second goal of the playoffs to give the Ice Dogs a 1-0 lead. Joe Cardarelli and Christian Larrivee both assisted on the goal. However, at 9:45 of the first Idaho tied it up with a goal by Tim Verbeek, from Darrell Hay and Lance Galbriath. Less than three minutes later, Idaho took a 2-1 lead on an unassisted shorthanded goal by Ben Keup.

The Steelheads built a cushion at 10:43 of the second when Mike Stutzel gave Idaho a 3-1 lead on the power play. 5:18 into the final period, the Ice Dogs attempted to mount a comeback, as Matt Noga scored with help from Michael Lambert and Mike Vellinga. Despite pulling the goalie in the final minute of play, the Ice Dogs were unable to tie it up, watching their five game series get evened up.

Sebastien Centomo made 22 saves for Long Beach, while Frank Doyle had 29 for Idaho. The Steelheads finished 1-4 on the power play while the Ice Dogs went 0-4. With the series now tied at one game apiece, Idaho takes over home ice advantage with two of the possible three remaining games being played in Boise.

The Ice Dogs and Steelheads will play Game 3 of their best-of-five series tomorrow night at the Bank of America Center in Boise, Idaho. If a Game 5 is necessary, the teams will return to Long Beach to play the deciding game on Wednesday at 7 PM. For more information, call (562) ICE-DOGS or visit www.icedogs.com.
