March 27, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads lost to the San Diego Gulls tonight, 3-1 before the tenth sellout of the season, 5,401 in its final game at the Bank of America Centre. The Steelheads finish with a 23-10-3 record on home ice. Overall Idaho is now 38-22-8, and fighting for home ice advantage with the second place Las Vegas Wranglers as they position for the first round in the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Idaho goaltender Scott Kabotoff stopped 19 Gulls attempts and falls to 6-6-2, while San Diego goalie Trevor Koenig made 27 saves and improves his record to 34-7-8.
Idaho's Derek Paget knocked home the first goal of the game on a pass from Jeff Bateman. Bateman was behind the net and fed Paget who went five hole on Koenig at 7:01 of the first. The Gulls evened the game at 11:01 when Samy Nasreddine took a pass from Greg Barber and beat Kabotoff. Then, San Diego's David Neale snagged a one-goal lead for his team on a wraparound tally to end the period. Neale's eighth goal of the season proved to be the game-winner.
San Diego's forecheck kept the Steelheads at bay in much of the second period, as Idaho had difficulty getting the puck out of its own zone. However, Idaho did have some quality shots, but each time was turned away by Koenig, who made 12 saves. The second period ended 2-1, San Diego.
Idaho pressed for the tying goal in the third period, but could not get the puck past Koenig, who made nine saves in the third. With Kabotoff on the bench for the extra attacker, Koenig denied several close-in scoring chances by the Steelheads. San Diego scored the only goal of the third period at 19:57 with an empty net goal by Sylvain Deschatelets.
Idaho concludes its inaugural ECHL regular season with a four game road trip, with single games at Las Vegas and Bakersfield and a pair at Fresno before opening the Kelly Cup playoffs.
