Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Chicago Steel fans bid over $10,500 on game-worn Chicago Steel jerseys worn in the team's March 19 victory for Military Appreciation Night presented by McCue Chevy. The net proceeds from the auction will benefit Wounded Warrior Project.
Founded in 2003, the Wounded Warrior Project mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors who incurred a physical or mental injury, illnesses, or wound, co-incident to their military service on or after September 11, 2001.
The uniquely-designed jerseys gave the Steel a completely different look that night, straying from the customary red, black and white color scheme to green jerseys with black and silver accents. Chicago defeated the Youngstown Phantoms 7-2.
Rookie forward Chris Delaney scored his first USHL goal and added another for his first career two-goal game as a member of the Chicago Steel. Individually, Delaney's jersey entered the night with a minimum bid of $150 but ended up raising $525 after the Hopkinton, Mass., native's two-goal outburst.
Six Steel jerseys were sold for the 'Buy it Now' price of $600.
McCue Chevy, a Steel partner since 2015, approached the team prior to the 2019-2020 season with the idea of organizing a special event to benefit Wounded Warrior Project.
"Wounded Warrior Project is honored to receive ongoing support from the Chicago Steel Hockey Team and McCue Chevy," said Samantha Iannotti, Warrior Support with Wounded Warrior Project. "The kindness and generosity from the Chicago Steel, their fans, and McCue Chevy has allowed us to provide life-changing programs to wounded warrior and their families. We are humbled by their dedication to honoring and empowering America's injured veterans."
This was the third special jersey auction scheduled for the 2021-2022 season with previous fundraisers supporting the Cyclones Amateur Hockey Association and the Geneva Academic Foundation. Together, more than $26,000 has been raised through these three special events.
The Steel begin the final month of the regular season with back-to-back contests against the Madison Capitols, starting on Friday, April 1 at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The 7:05 pm CT puck drop is Crazy Hat Night with Special Helmet Auction presented by Waubonsee Community College as Steel players will each wear uniquely designed helmets made by Waubonsee Community College art students. The helmets will be auction off with proceeds benefitting the Waubonsee Foundation.
