Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Veteran Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman Tucker Ness will play college hockey for Arizona State University at the conclusion of his United States Hockey League career.

Ness announced his decision via social media this week. He is the 20th active Black Hawks player to have chosen a Division I NCAA program.

"There are times we've asked Tucker to play a lot of minutes this season, and he has shown a lot of versatility for us," said Black Hawks Head Coach Matt Smaby. "Tucker has the frame to find success at the next level, and I know he was very excited about Arizona State for a variety of reasons."

Before the current season - his second in Waterloo - Ness was chosen as a Black Hawks assistant captain. He has taken the ice for 52 of 54 Waterloo games, recording 16 points (four goals, 12 assists). Ness' four goals tie him for the most by a Hawks defenseman. His is also tied at the top of that group with 97 shots this season. Ness blasted in a goal on January 7th when Waterloo visited the Sioux Falls Stampede, recording his first career game-winner in the 4-1 decision.

As a rookie in 2020/21, Ness played in 44 games with a goal and four assists.

Arizona State was established as a Division I hockey program in 2015. Defenseman Ethan Szmagaj - Ness' Waterloo teammate last season - recently completed his freshman season in Tempe.
