Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

Quad City Steamwheelers Notes/Story Ideas

Livin' on a Prayer: The Quad City Steamwheelers still have a shot at making the playoffs. Heading into last weekend they held the strength of schedule over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. However, after the weekend concluded Wilkes-Barre had retaken the lead in the strength of schedule. Coupled with most of the teams Quad City needed to lose over the weekend winning, the Steamwheelers playoff chances just got tougher. However, the good news is the Steamwheelers still have a chance. In order for Quad City to make the playoffs they have to win along with Macon, while Manchester, Wilkes-Barre and Birmingham must lose.

Quad City Streaks: Kris Peters streak of at least one touchdown reception a game has been extended to 12 games... Tim Dodge has caught at least one receiving touchdown in the past 10 games.

Trio Makes History: Kris Peters, Tim Dodge and Jack Walker Jr. became the first trio in arenafootball2 history to tally 100 receptions and 1,000 yards in a single season. The trio also became the third trio to catch over 1,000 receiving yards for one team in the same season on July 8th.

Record Setting Pace: Quad City quarterback Tim Hicks and Albany quarterback Ryan Vena are both still on a record setting pace to shatter the league record for total passing yards in a single season. It appears that Vena will hold the league record at the end of the season as he is on pace to finish with 4,726 yards passing, 151 yards more than Hicks. Hicks is on pace to finish the season with 4,575 passing yards breaking the league record of 4,489 yards in the final game of the regular season at Manchester. Hicks is also on pace to destroy the team record of 4,357 yards set by former 'Wheeler Tony Zimmerman in 2003. Hicks only needs 68 yards to surpass Zimmerman in the regular season finale.

Frazier Looking for Number 25: If the Quad City Steamwheelers defeat the Manchester Wolves on Friday night head coach Rick Frazier will earn his 25th victory as a head coach of an arenafootball2 team. These numbers do not include AFL games.

Scouting the Wolves: The Steamwheelers will be looking for a chance to spoil the Wolves playoffs hopes, while the Wolves will be looking for quarterback D. Bryant to lead them into the playoffs. The quarterback has thrown for 2,424 yards and 59 touchdowns this season on 339 attempts. His favorite target has been Steve Gonzalez who is second in the leaugue in touchdown receptions with 44. Gonzalez has also tallied 1,355 receiving yards on 118 receptions. Defensively the Wolves are led by William Haith and Brian Mance who have 65.6 and 61.5 total tackles respectively. Haith is also leading the defense in interceptions (6) and pass breakups (31).

You are Invited to the Party: All of the media members covering the Quad City Steamwheelers this season are invited to the sponsor party being held at 5004 State Street in Riverdale on Monday, July 31 (Mike Bawden's House). The party begins at 6:30 p.m. with food and drinks being provided. While the Steamwheelers hope to be in the playoffs, if the team does not make the playoffs this will be the last opportunity for media to talk to the entire team about this past season.

Fan Club Banquet: The Steamwheelers fan club held their second annual Steamwheeler Appreciation banquet last night. The banquet featured a highlight DVD of the 2006 season along with speeches by majority partner/operator Larry Bush, coach Frazier and fan club president Gary Stibolt. In addition to praising the players for the season all three thanked the media for their coverage of the team this past season.
