Manchester Wolves News Release
The arenafootball2 league office announced today that Manchester Wolves' WR/LB Wendell Williams was named the af2 US ARMY Ironman of the Week for his performance during last Saturday's 51-50 victory over East Division rival Albany Conquest during Week 15.
Williams (5-11, 190) played what was easily his best all-around game in a Wolves uniform against the Conquest. The Greenbelt, MD native caught three passes for 11 yards and one touchdown, while returning five kickoffs for 112 yards and an electrifying touchdown. On the defensive end of the ball Williams collected a career high 6.5 total tackles and a key interception.
"Wendell has gotten better every week since he's been here," said Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett. "He's played Wide Receiver/Defensive Back, then Wide Receiver/Linebacker, and last week he even returned kicks for the first time. The more responsibility we give me, the more he steps up."
This is the fourth time that a Wolves' player has taken home an individual weekly league award this season, and first US ARMY Ironman honor. Jamaal Perry earned the "Cutters Catch of the Week" during Week 2, while Allistair Sebastien and Brian Mance brought home the ADT Defensive Player of the Week awards for their individual efforts during Week 3 and Week 8 respectively.
After a slow start to the season which he saw limited action in the Wolves first six games, Williams has really turned it on as of late, catching 13 touchdown passes in his last six games. This year, Wendell has caught 48 passes, for 515 yards and 14 touchdowns.
In 2005, the Rhode Island graduate won an AFL championship with John Elway's Colorado Crush as part of their practice squad; however he'd love to be a part of another championship team here in Manchester.
"It would mean a lot more to win a ring here, especially with me being able to contribute more," Williams said. "With Colorado, I was mostly on the practice squad because I got there in the middle of the season. That was just a good situation I walked in on after I came in from NFL Europe. But it was unbelievable because a lot of people don't get to win one."
The Wolves take to Brady Sullivan Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena with playoff hopes on the line this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Quad City Steamwheelers for "Fan Appreciation Night" presented by Bellman's Jewelers. Everyone in attendance will receive a FREE bingo card for a chance to win great prizes all night long!!! The first 5,000 fans will also receive the first-ever "Lady Wolf Pack" calendar!
