Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Steamers (25-10, 7-2) broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 7-5 victory over the Peninsula Pilots (16-21-1, 4-6) on Wednesday at Historic Hicks Field.
Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) hit a sacrifice fly and Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the tie and Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College), Matt Duncan (Morehead State University), DJ Johnson (Mercer University), and Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) made it stand up with three innings of one run base ball.
The Steamers built up a 4-0 lead heading to the fifth inning when they scored a run in the first on a Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) RBI single, two runs in the third on a Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) sacrifice fly and an error, and a run in the fourth on Spencer Branigan's (University of Pennsylvania) seventh home run of the season off of Anthony Campanella, the Pilots starting pitcher.
Peninsula finally broke the scoreboard in the fifth inning against right-handed pitcher Kevin McCarthy (Marist College). With two outs and a runner at second base Josh Eldridge singled home Andrew Amaro to cut the lead to 4-1. The very next batter Josh Henderson doubled home Eldridge and the lead was cut in half at 4-2 Steamers.
Peninsula tied the game in the sixth with two more runs, this time off right-handed pitcher David Teasley (Mercer University). With two outs and the bases loaded Nick Thompson hit a two-run double to tie the game at 4-4. On the play Zac MacAneney tried to score all the way from first base and was thrown out by Kanzler to Kraemer to Wilbur Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) to end the inning and preserve the tie. The out at the plate was the second runner the Steamers threw out at the plate in the ball game, and they have now thrown out five runners at the plate in their last five games.
That set-up the tie breaking sixth inning. For insurance Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to give Edenton the 7-5 lead. With the Steamers two long balls they have pushed their season total to 33 home runs in 35 games and continue to lead the Coastal Plain League in the home run category.
Teasley earned the win for his 1.2 innings of relief, he improved to 2-0 and Egan picked up his 13th save of the season. The 13 saves for Egan leads the CPL and is two shy of tying the Steamers franchise record set by Luke Demko (University of Rhode Island) in 2008.
Kanzler increased his on-base streak to 14 straight games and Meadows led the day at the plate going three-for-four with a single, a double, and a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Beaird was three-for-four with three singles and an RBI while Kraemer went two-for-three with two singles, an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Branigan's home run tied him with his teammate Camporeale for the CPL lead with seven home runs.
