Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - Edenton (21-8, 3-0) scored five times in the top of the seventh inning to cruise to an 8-2 victory over the Morehead City Marlins (11-19, 1-2) at Big Rock Stadium on Tuesday night.
Right-handed pitcher Troy Scribner (Sacred heart University) made his first start and second appearance overall for the Steamers. He squared off against left-handed pitcher Matt Wainman, who was making his fourth start and sixth appearance overall. It was also Wainman's third start against the Steamers this season.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings Wainman, for the Marlins, stranded three Steamers in the first two innings. Edenton in the bottom of the second got an outfield assist from right fielder Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University). With Robbie Rea at third, Corey Bass hit a pop fly to right field that Beaird caught and he unleashed a bullet to the plate in time to retire Rea trying to score to end the inning.
Steamers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) singled. Two batters later Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) walked and Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) pushed his hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI single to plate Kanzler and give Edenton the early lead.
Morehead City tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan Cranmer was hit by a Scribner pitch. A throwing error on an errant pick-off throw by Scribner allowed Cranmer to move to second base. After a wild pitch moved Cranmer to third, Sal Annunziata singled him home to tie the score 1-1.
Wainman was lifted in the top of the fifth for Dario Santangelo. Wainman pitched four innings and allowed one run on six hits; he walked one and struck out four.
Morehead City took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth against Scribner when Cranmer beat out an infield single. Sam Ott followed with a single that pushed up Cranmer to second base. After a Robbie Rea fielder's choice, Eric Peterson singled home Cranmer and it was 2-1 Marlins.
Santangelo remained in the game into the top of the seventh with a 2-1 lead for the Marlins. Kanzler lined out to begin the inning and Beaird flew out. The Steamers then got a walk to Fernandez and Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) was hit by a pitch. AJ Goetz came into the game and walked Kraemer. Wigberto Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) lined a double into the gap in left-center field and cleared the bases to give Edenton 4-2 lead. Adam Kirsch (Florida International University) singled and Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) hit a two-run double to make it 6-2 Steamers.
Scribner was pulled after six innings pitched for Edenton, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk, with four strikeouts. He left in line for his first win of the season.
Santangelo pitched 2.2 innings allowing two runs (both earned) on two hits and two walks; he struck out one. Goetz took the brunt of the punishment, facing five hitters and retiring none of them. He allowed three runs (all earned) on three hits and two walks; he struck out none.
Ryan Oglesby was dinged for two more runs by the Steamers in the top of the eighth. Fernandez led-off with a double. Camporeale singled Fernandez to third and was then thrown out trying to steal second base. Kraemer followed with an RBI single and two batters later Kirsch singled home Kraemer to push the lead to 8-2 Steamers.
Righty Matt Duncan (Morehead State University) pitched two scoreless innings to get to left-handed pitcher Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College) for the ninth. Perkins retired the Marlins in order to complete the victory.
The win goes to Troy Scribner, his first of the season in his first start of the season. The loss is hung on Dario Santangelo, he falls to 0-2 on the season.
