Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs improved to 20-10 on the season with a 3-2 victory over the Asheboro Copperheads on Tuesday night, impressing a sellout crowd of more than 6,000 fans that packed "The Swamp" to watch the game. It was the perfect way to kickoff the evening that culminated in the biggest and brightest Fireworks Extravaganza of the summer.
Drasen Johnson picked up his second victory of the season as he worked seven strong innings as the starter. He retired the leadoff man in each of those seven frames, and walked no one. He has walked only one opposing hitter in over 20 innings of work on the mound this season.
Asheboro picked up a run in the top of the first inning, and held that lead until the fourth. Connor Obrochta (Tampa) picked up an RBI double in the bottom of that frame, scoring Reed Harper (Austin Peay) to tie the game. Blake Beemer (Ball State) followed with an RBI single to plate Obrochta, and the Dogs took a 2-1 lead.
That score remained until the eighth, when Sal Giardina (Lynn) picked up his league-leading 26th RBI with a base hit that scored Zach Gawrych (Tampa) to make it 3-1. The run extended Gawrych's league-leading run total to 29 on the season.
The Copperheads made it 3-2 in the ninth, but Tyler Brunnemann (Hardin-Simmons) picked up his fifth save of the season to seal the win.
The next SwampDogs home game is on Thursday, July 5th, where its Opening Night Part Deux at the ballpark. Fans can relive some of the greatest sequels of all time.
