Forest City Owls News Release

Gastonia, NC- The Silver Cup will have to wait at least one more game to be claimed by the Forest City Owls. After winning the first six games of the season against the Gastonia Grizzlies, the Owls lost in Gastonia 6-3 on Tuesday night. Jason Martyn allowed just one run on five hits over seven strong innings of work. The righty also struck out ten Owls, the most by any pitcher against Forest City this season.

Martyn got a fair amount of offensive support as well. The Grizzlies bats finally managed to get to Owls' starter Ryan Tezak in the 5th and 6th innings. After Tezak scored wins in his last two starts against Gastonia, the righty surrendered a pair of RBI singles with two outs in the 5th. Then, Keenen Maddox homered against Tezak to lead off the 6th. Derrick Phillips followed with a double to knock Tezak out of the game.

Adam Westmoreland relieved Tezak and later gave up a two-run single to Luis Arrizurieta. Tezak was charged with four of the six runs scored by the Grizzlies, matching his total allowed in the season to that point.

Forest City took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning on an RBI double by Alex Close. The Owls also started on the comeback trail in the 8th inning with an RBI groundout by Kurt Seiders and a sacrifice fly from Gunnar Heidt. Any thoughts of a second straight comeback by the Owls were quickly extinguished when Dale Innes struck out the side in the 9th to end the game.

The Owls will celebrate Independence Day in Thomasville with a game against the Hi-Toms tomorrow night. Forest City returns home for a return match against the Tommies on Thursday.
