Steamers Split Double Header With Generals

EDENTON, NC - The Steamers (13-3) blew a two-run lead in the top of the seventh inning when the Generals (8-9) scored four times and took game one 4-2. Edenton bounced back on Michael Camporeale's two home runs with a 3-1 win over Petersburg in game two at Historic Hicks Field.

Left-handed pitcher Justin D'Amato (Saint John Fisher College) made his third start of the season for Edenton against Danny Mooney of the Generals, who was making his second start of the season.

Edenton scored first in the bottom of the third when Jason Kanzler (University of Buffalo) hit a two out single. Nathan Burns (Florida International University) reached on an error that moved Kanzler to second base. Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) drove in Kanzler with an RBI single that put Edenton up 1-0.

The Steamers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth against Mooney. Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) led-off with a single and a Michael Massi (Mercer University) ground ball moved him to second. After a Kanzler ground out, Burns picked up his sixth RBI of the season with a single that allowed Meadows to score ahead of the throw from center field and it was 2-0 Steamers.

D'Amato pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits, three walks and he struck out seven. He was lifted in the top of the seventh for closer Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University). Dillon Vitale pinch hit to begin the seventh and walked. Eric Toole hit into a fielder's choice and traded places with Vitale. Rickey Castro then walked and Casey Roche singled to load the bases. Jake Yacinich was walked to drive in a run and cut the lead in half; 2-1 Steamers. Egan got Trevor Kenyon to foul out then Nolan Woody drove in two with a ground rule double that put Petersburg up 3-2. They got one more run when Grant Zawadzki reached on an error that scored Yacinich and it was 4-2.

Mooney finished the game with two strikeouts and a fly out in the bottom of the seventh to earn the complete game come from behind win. He improved to 3-0. Egan took the loss, falling to 1-1 and D'Amato, for his six shutout innings did not get a decision.

Left-handed pitcher Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College) made his second start of the season in game two. He faced off against left-handed pitcher Anthony Pisano.

The game was scoreless through two innings and Perkins was replaced with right-handed pitcher Matt Duncan (Morehead State University). Perkins pitched two innings, allowing no runs and no hits. He walked one batter and struck one batter.

Duncan pitched through an error in the top of the third and held Petersburg scoreless. In the bottom half Edenton got a two-out triple from Burns. Camporeale came up next and blasted a pitch from Pisano over the double wall in left field for a 2-0 Steamers lead.

Duncan pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit to the Generals. He did not allow a walk and struck out three.

Duncan gave way to DJ Johnson (Mercer University) in the top of the sixth. Johnson gave up the first run of his season on a solo home run off the bat of Michael Revell, who had entered as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the fourth inning. The home run made it 2-1 Steamers.

Camporeale struck again in the bottom of the sixth off Pisano with his second home run of the game. A solo shot to the deepest corner of Hicks Field that pushed the Steamer lead to 3-1.

Johnson remained in the game and faced four batters in the top of the seventh to preserve Duncan's third win of the season and earn his first save of the season in the 3-1 victory over the Generals.
