Morehead City Marlins News Release
HAMPTON, Va. - Matt Wainman struck out 10 batters and the Morehead City Marlins (6-13) scored eight runs against the Peninsula Pilots (7-9-1) in an 8-2 win Saturday evening at War Memorial Stadium, marking the first time the Marlins have won consecutive games this season.
Wainman (1-1) went six innings, striking out 10 without walking a batter and surrendering just four hits. The left-hander at one point struck out five Pilots in a row, and no out left the infield in his time on the mound.
For the second straight night the Marlins scored first, plating two runs without recording a hit in the second inning. Sam Ott and Chace Mitchell walked back-to-back to lead off the frame. After Mitchell was erased on a fielder's choice Sal Annunziata walked and Robbie Rea reached on an error by the center fielder scoring Ott. The next batter Corey Bass earned a bases-loaded walk, scoring Matt Anderson from third and making the score 2-0.
The Marlins continued to pour it on in the third inning, as Geoff DeGroot singled and moved to second base when Mitchell was hit by a pitch. Anderson then followed with a single to score DeGroot from second base. Annunziata followed up with an RBI single of his own and Bass hit in to a fielder's choice, scoring Anderson from third to give the Marlins a 5-0 lead.
Morehead City increased its lead in the fourth inning when Ryan Cranmer and DeGroot singled back-to-back to lead off the inning. After a wild pitch, Ott grounded out to second base, scoring Cranmer from third and giving the Marlins a 6-0 advantage. The Marlins scored again in the sixth inning when DeGroot walked, was replaced by Brandon Bass and Bass moved around the bases on a wild pitch, passed ball and wild pitch in that order to increase the lead to 7-0, before plating a run on an RBI groundout by Corey Bass in the ninth inning to make the score 8-0.
The Pilots scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, both unearned, to close the scoring at 8-2.
DeGroot reached base all four times he came to the plate with two singles, two walks and a run scored. Anderson was 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored while Corey Bass notched three RBIs despite not registering a hit.
The Marlins return home after a three-game road trip tomorrow night to take on the Wilson Tobs. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: Every Marlin in the starting lineup reached base by the fourth inning... Wainman retired 12 in a row from the end of the first inning to the top of the fifth... In three innings the Marlins scored a run without recording a hit... The Marlins walked 11 times, a season high... Relief pitcher Evan Zerff left the game in the ninth inning after being struck in the leg with a line drive.
