Edenton Steamers News Release
PETERSBURG, VA - The Steamers (33-15, 15-7) scored in five of the seven innings including a nine run top of the seventh and withstood a six-run bottom of the seventh by Petersburg (21-27, 7-14) in the 17-12 Steamer victory in game one. Kevin McCarthy pitched six innings of one hit baseball in game two as the Steamers got out of town with a double header sweep with an 8-1 win on Thursday night at Petersburg Sports Complex.
The Steamers and Generals waged a back and forth contest in game one of their double header at Petersburg Sports Complex. Edenton took an 8-6 lead into the top of the seventh inning by scoring two runs in the first inning, three runs in the top of the third, one run in the top of the fourth and two runs in the top of the fifth. Of the Steamers eight runs, only four of them were earned due to the Generals committing three errors in the first six innings.
For the Generals they scored three runs in the bottom of the second off Justin D'Amato
(St. John Fisher College), two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and one run in the bottom of the fifth to set up the wackiest inning this season for either team.
Edenton scored nine times in the top of the seventh against JT Wauford to blow open a close game. In the inning Edenton sent 15 men to the plate and picked up five hits, Petersburg issued five walks and there was an error and two hit batters. Between the first out and the second out of the inning seven men reached base safely for Edenton.
The seemingly safe Steamer lead of 17-6 was tested in the bottom of the seventh. David Teasley remained in the game after replacing D'Amato with one out in the sixth inning. Petersburg loaded the bases and then got an RBI hit batter, a two-run double, an RBI ground out followed by an RBI infield single to make it 17-11. With two outs Eric Toole singled a run home and the trail runner, Ricky Castro was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) to end the game. Petersburg scored six times on five hits, two walks, an error and a hit batsman.
D'Amato earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing six runs (five earned), two walks and he struck out two batters. He improved to 4-2. Rick Teasley took the loss pitching 4.1 innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out three batters.
The Steamers set new season highs in runs scored in an inning in the seventh with nine, and runs in a game with 17. They tied their season high of 18 hits and added seven doubles in the 17-12 win.
Leading the offensive assault in game one was Michael Camporeale (University of Washington), who went three-for-four with two doubles, a single, three RBIs and a run scored. Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) went two-for-three with a home run and a single, an RBI and he scored three times. He was on base five out of the six times he came to the plate; adding two walks. Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) went two-for-four with a single, a double, three runs scored and three RBIs. Every starter plus two players that entered off the bench during play scored a run except one in the ball game.
Edenton once again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead scoring twice in the opening frame against Danny Mooney the starter for Petersburg in game two. Kirsch reached base on a one out single and Madison Beaird reached on an error. Michael Camporeale doubled home Kirsch to make it 1-0 Steamers. With the double, Camporeale increased his season total to 16 and broke the Steamers franchise record for doubles in a season. The previous mark of 15 was set in 2010 by Brian Blasik (University of Dayton). Beaird came home on a Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) ground out to make it 2-0.
The Steamers continued to add to their lead in game two, scoring once in the top of the second. Adam Kirsch drove in Massi with a fly out to right field to make it 3-0.
Edenton added two more runs in the top of the fourth when Kanzler hit his third triple of the year scoring Massi who reached on an error. Kirsch drove in his second run of the ball game with a single to make it 5-0 Steamers.
In the top of the fifth Branigan doubled to begin the inning and Robbie Zinsmeister singled him to third. Zinsmeister stole second base and the catcher Dillon Vitale put the throw into centerfield and Branigan came home to score. Zinsmiester now at third scored when Wigberto Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) struck out and the ball got away from Vitale to make it 7-0.
Mooney didn't make it out of the fifth inning, in total he went 4.1 innings and allowed 7 runs (four earned) on 11 hits and no walks. He struck out eight batters in the loss, falling to 4-3.
Kevin McCarthy had plenty of offense on this night. McCarthy relinquished just one hit and one run (earned) through six innings of work to Petersburg; he hit two batters and walked a batter also. He earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-2 on the season.
The Steamers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Zinsmeister struck again with a single that scored Beaird for an 8-0 lead.
Petersburg scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a ground out by Jake Yacinich that scored Will Ward to make it 8-1. Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) came on and pitched a scoreless ninth and the Steamers earned the double header sweep with an 8-1 victory in game two.
In both games the Steamers offense banged out 10 doubles and 12 extra base hits. Jason Kanzler's outfield assist in game one was the 20th assist on the season by the Steamers outfielders.
