
Steamers Lead League with Eight All-Star Selections

EDENTON, N.C - The Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today that along with head coach Bryan Hill, outfielder/first baseman Trent Miller, pitcher/first baseman Nick Miller, catcher Jacob Reese, second baseman Nick Thompson, third baseman Josh Hampton, designated hitter Adam Kirsch, and pitchers Jake McCoy and Connor Cuff have been selected as 2013 All-Stars.
Trent Miller, a junior at Middle Tennessee State University in the NCAA Division I Sun Belt Conference, has played 23 games thus far with a .309 batting average. His 21 runs scored are good for tied for second on the team and his 25 hits are second on the team also. Miller has added two doubles and four home runs along with 12 RBIs. The 6-0, 215-pounder from Kansas City, M.O has swiped seven bags in eight attempts and has not committed a miscue in the field, logging time at both first base and the corner outfield spots.
Nick Miller has served the Steamers this summer as a two-way player, having made four starts on the mound and playing 17 games in the field, predominantly at first base. In his four starts Miller is 2-0 in 25 innings on the hill. His ERA is a paltry 0.72, which is good for third in the league and he has allowed 19 hits and two earned runs; the latter is tied for first in the league. Miller has walked six batters, struck out 12 and opposing hitters are batting .209 against him. In his 17 games in the field, the junior from University of Northern Colorado in the NCAA Division I Great West Conference is batting .271 going 16 for 59. He has scored seven runs and smacked four home runs and two doubles.
Reese, in 15 games behind the plate is batting .265 with 13 hits and two doubles. From Eastern Illinois University in the NCAA Division I Ohio Valley Conference, the junior has scored seven runs, driven in four runs, is slugging .306 and has an on-base percentage of .333. He's added four walks and has only struck out twice in 49 at-bats.
Thompson, a two-year CPL participant, has played both second base and left field for Edenton. Out of East Carolina University in the NCAA Division I Conference USA, the sophomore righty utility man is leading the Steamers in batting average at .315 and is second in the league in slugging average at .603 and home runs with 5. He ranks third in the league in walks with 17, is fourth in the league in runs with 22, OBP at .448 and RBIs with 22. The 6-1, 195-pound Chesapeake, Va. native has played 24 games, including 22 starts, and added four doubles, a triple, three sacrifice flies and one stolen base.
Hampton, a 5-11, 190-pound redshirt-junior from Wilmington University (DE) in the NCAA Division II Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, began the season red-hot for Edenton, being named the CPL Rawlings Hitter of the Week for week one of action. Hampton is fourth on the Steamers in batting average at .305 and is the CPL leader in triples with 4 and RBIs with 26. He also ranks fourth in the league in total bases with 51 and in 26 games is the team leader with 29 hits. The righty has added five doubles, three home runs and 19 runs to go along with a .537 slugging average, 12 walks, .402 OBP and is seven-for-seven in stolen bases.
Kirsch, a two-year Steamer, is the CPL leader in doubles with 13, ranks fifth in the league with a .551 slugging average and is batting .308 in 24 games as a designated hitter. Out of Texas Tech University in the NCAA Division I Big Twelve Conference, Kirsch is 24 for 78 with 11 runs scored, two home runs and 17 RBIs. His 43 total bases are good for third on the team; he has walked 12 times and has an OBP of .413.
McCoy serves as Edenton's closer and in 11 appearances is 3-0 with a 2.19 ERA and five saves, which ranks second in the league for the category. In 12.1 innings pitched he has allowed just seven hits and three earned runs. McCoy has issued only two walks to 10 strikeouts and opposing hitters are batting only .175 against the product from College of the Desert (CA) in the CCCBCA Foothill Conference.
Cuff, a sophomore starting pitcher for the Clams out of the University of Pennsylvania in the NCAA Division I Ivy League, is 3-0 with a 2.18 ERA in four starts totaling 20.2 innings on the mound. The 6-4, 205-pounder has allowed 15 hits, six runs (five earned) and eight walks to 19 strikeouts for a .197 batting average against.
This season's eight all-star selections are the franchise's most ever selected in one season for the Edenton Steamers. The 2013 CPL All-Star festivities kick off on Sunday, July 7th with the home run derby and hitters challenge. The following evening, Monday, July 8th the 2013 CPL All-Star game will be played with first pitch from War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Va. at 7:05 p.m.
