Edenton Steamers News Release
PETERSBURG, V.A - The Edenton Steamers (23-8, 2-2) scored a run in the eighth and two more in the tenth to snatch a 4-2 victory over the Petersburg Generals (5-23, 1-3) at the Petersburg Sports Complex on Friday night.
David St. Lawrence took his 2-0 record to the mound at the Sports Complex to take on the Petersburg Generals and specifically Brandon Taylor, who was making his fifth start of the season.
The Steamers entered having given up one run in the last 18 innings pitched, that run was Petersburg's lone run two days ago when they defeated Edenton 1-0.
After a scoreless first inning, Petersburg got on the board in the bottom of the second when Josh Markins led-off with a single. Markins then moved all the way to third on a groundout by Dan Johnson and came home on a groundout by Jordan Hopkins to make it 1-0 Petersburg.
Edenton, against Petersburg pitching had not managed to score any runs in 12 and a third innings until Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) led-off the top of the fourth with a single. Two batters later Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) hit his league-leading 14th double to score Miller and tie the ball game at 1-1.
St. Lawrence pitched six strong innings, allowing only the one run on three hits, one walk and five strikeouts. He did not earn a decision for his effort.
For Petersburg, Taylor fared much the same, pitching six innings and allowing six hits and one run. He did not issue a free pass and struck out six in his no-decision effort.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning. Petersburg picked up three hits in the inning against John Williams (George Mason University), all bunt singles. Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) had a throwing error on one of the bunt singles and then Dan Johnson came home on Stephen Brooks double play ball that gave the Generals a 2-1 lead. Beau Beaudreau (Flagler College) entered the game and struck out Brent Turner to end the inning.
Edenton, in the top of the eighth inning Petersburg forgot how to play defense, committing three errors in the inning, including two on one play. Laz Villa (Reedley College) reached on an error by the third baseman, followed by Hampton reaching on an error by the short stop. On the Hampton play the left fielder committed an error in the outfield that allowed Villa to come all the way around from first to score the tying run against Logan Sawyer.
Andrew Nelson (St Catharine College) and Jake McCoy (College of the Desert) combined to pitch two scoreless frames to send the ball game into extra innings. Sawyer for Petersburg began the ninth and allowed a single but Travis McQueen finished the inning after the hit and we were headed to the tenth.
Travis McQueen remained on the mound for Petersburg in the top of the tenth. Villa led-off with a bunt single and then promptly stole second base. After a Trent Miller strikeout and a Hampton walk, Kirsch laced a double down the left field line that glanced off the leather of Markins and rolled into the corner.
Villa was off to the races and scored easily to give Edenton a 3-2 lead. The double was Kirsch's second of the game and 15th of the season. Alex Delgado, the next hitter, hit a sacrifice fly to score Hampton and give Edenton a 4-2 lead.
McCoy came back out for the bottom of the tenth and retired the Generals post haste to close out the 4- 2 victory. McCoy earns the win for his two innings in relief, not allowing a run or a hit and striking out three, improving to 4-0 on the season. McQueen took the loss in his inning and a third for the two runs in the tenth he allowed on two hits and two walks with one strikeout, he falls to 2-2 on the season.
Edenton improves to (22-8, 2-2), while the Generals fall to (5-23, 1-3). The Steamers travel to Morehead City tomorrow night before the Coastal Plain League All-Star break on Sunday and Monday in Peninsula.
