Edenton Steamers News Release
HAMPTON, VA - The Steamers broke their two game losing streak, coming from behind again with the go ahead run in the top of the eighth inning on a Wes Meadows double and downing the Pilots 3-2 in Hampton, VA at War Memorial Stadium on Friday.
Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) hit his second double of the game in the top of the eighth off Brad Zambron to score the go ahead run, Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) and give the Steamers the 3-2 lead.
Edenton entered Friday's ball game losers of two straight for only the second time this season and trying to avoid their first three game losing streak of the year.
Edenton's offense scratched out two runs through seven innings to lock themselves into a 2-2 tie with Peninsula into the eighth inning. The Steamers were trailing Peninsula early but a Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) walk and a ground rule Camporeale double put runners on second and third. Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Kanzler scampered home to cut the lead to 2-1 Pilots.
The equalizer came in the top of the seventh inning when Meadows doubled with one out. Adam Kirsch (Florida International University) singled home Meadows for a 2-2 tie.
Peninsula jumped out in front in the bottom of the second against right-handed pitcher Taylor Braun (Wright State University) on Nick Thompson's single, a sacrifice bunt and a ground out that moved Thompson to third base. Andrew Montague singled home Thompson for the early 1-0 Pilot lead.
Peninsula added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth on a one out walk to Geno Escalante. Joey Andrews reached on an error that moved Escalante to third base and Andrew Amaro reached on an infield single that scored Escalante to push the lead to 2-0 Pilots.
Braun turned in his best outing this season with the Steamers, pitching seven innings and relinquishing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked two and struck out three and departed in line for the win.
Kanzler stayed hot, picking up two hits and reaching on a walk to extend his on-base streak to 11 games. He scored a run and stole a base as well in the win. As a team the Steamers connected for four doubles, one each by Camporeale and Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) and the two by Meadows.
Braun earned the win and improved to 2-2 on the season. DJ Johnson (Mercer University) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) came on to record the final out for his Coastal Plain League leading 11th save of the year. Egan allowed a hit with runners on first and second to the only batter he faced Zac MacAneney and left fielder Michael Camporeale threw out Andrew Montague at the plate to end the ball game.
