Owls Slide Continues in Gastonia

Gastonia, NC- The Owls were their own worst enemy once again on Friday night in Gastonia. One night after giving up five unearned runs, Forest City surrendered two more in a 7-3 loss to the Grizzlies. It's the second straight time the Owls have lost to the worst team in the Coastal Plain League and have been prevented from clinching the Silver Cup against their rivals. Drew Sain gave up all three Owls runs on eight hits, but allowed just one baserunner over his final three innings.
Forest City started strong, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Will Chandler and Dykota Spiess singled to start the inning. After a strikeout, Justin Bryan doubled down the left field line, scoring Chandler. Gunnar Heidt followed with an RBI groundout to bring home Spiess.
The lead wouldn't last long as the Grizzlies came back and grabbed four runs in the home half of the 2nd inning. Luis Paula walked the leadoff man in the 2nd, but retired the next two Gastonia batters. The floodgates then opened with three singles and a double, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Worse yet, Nate Chong was injured trying to make a diving catch on Billy Urban's two-run double and had to be taken out of the game.
Forest City's third run of the game came in the 3rd inning. Alex Close singled, then came around to score when Bryan Aanderud singled into right field and the ball was misplayed by Derrick Phillips. The one run deficit was as close as the Owls would get as the Grizzlies scored an unearned run in the 5th. Gastonia also plated two against Jason Driver in the 7th inning, with one of the two scored as an unearned run.
The Owls play host to the Columbia Blowfish tomorrow night. It will be Pink Out Night at the ballpark as the Owls will be wearing special pink jerseys to support the fight against breast cancer that will be auctioned off later. The Forest City Owls are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
