-SPIKES CONTINUE SEMIFINAL SERIES VS. RENEGADES TONIGHT: The State College Spikes look keep going in the 2014 New York-Penn League playoffs as they face the Hudson Valley Renegades in Game 2 of the best-of-three NYPL Semifinal Series tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes will host Game 3, if necessary, on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Hudson Valley swept a three-game series against State College August 2-4 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, but the Renegades lost six of their last eight games of the regular season. The Spikes won 15 of their last 18 games to finish on a high note after a 1-10 start to August. Hudson Valley leads the all-time series against State College, 18-9, and has won 10 of 14 meetings at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Both teams have faced Tri-City in the NYPL Championship Series in the last two years, with the Spikes falling to the ValleyCats in three games last year, and the Renegades winning the 2012 title in three games.
-LAST GAME: Daniel Poncedeleon made a strong start for the State College Spikes to begin the New York-Penn League Semifinal Series, but three fifth-inning runs for the Hudson Valley Renegades were the difference as Hudson Valley took the first game of the best-of-three series, 3-0, on Wednesday night.
Only one of Hudson Valley's three runs was earned by Poncedeleon, who struck out six batters over five innings. The right-hander gave up six hits and two walks during his tenure on the mound, but escaped a bases-loaded situation in the second with a groundball into a fielder's choice for the last out.
In the fifth, the Renegades got a leadoff single from Wilmer Dominguez, and after a sacrifice bunt from Alec Sole, an error put Braxton Lee on base. Coty Blanchard then walked to load the bases, and Dominguez scored on a wild pitch to give Hudson Valley its first run. Two batters later, Grant Kay's single to right field scored Lee and Blanchard for the final runs of the game.
The Spikes scattered six hits, including doubles from Robleys Reyes and Alex De Leon, but could not put more than one runner on base in an inning.
Hudson Valley starter Enderson Franco tossed seven shutout innings, giving up five hits while striking out eight batters in his second win over State College this year. Franco picked up a win over the Spikes on August 2 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Edgar Gomez got the save after finishing the game with two one-hit innings and striking out two batters.
-SPIKES TURN TO NYPL ALL-STAR ANDERSON: Right-hander Will Anderson will make the start for State College in Game 2. Anderson finished fifth in the New York-Penn League in ERA with a 2.43 mark, and pitched a scoreless inning in the NYPL All-Star Game on August 19 for the South squad. The 2013 26th-round draft choice of the Cardinals was also named the Spikes' Pitcher of the Year in pregame ceremonies this past Saturday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Anderson, who is making his 10th start at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this year, has not faced Hudson Valley this season.
-RENEGADES TAP WOOD FOR SECOND GAME: Right-hander Hunter Wood gets the start for Hudson Valley in Game 2 of the Semfinal Series. Wood went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in five starts at Dutchess Stadium, but went 2-4 with a 4.06 ERA on the road in the 2014 NYPL season. The Rogers, AR native did not face the Spikes during the regular season. Wood, a 29th-round draft choice of the Rays in 2013, started his 2014 season with Single-A Bowling Green, making six starts and going 1-0 with a 4.07 ERA. The Howard (TX) College product logged 14 straight Midwest League innings without allowing an earned run at one point this year.
-SPIKES SET RECORDS ON SATURDAY: The State College Spikes welcomed a franchise record 6,066 fans to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the regular season home finale, then treated them to a walk-off win in the 15th inning as they defeated the Batavia Muckdogs, 12-11, in the longest game in club history on Saturday night. The single-game attendance mark bettered the previous record of 5,836, set during the 2011 Home Opener against Williamsport, and marked the sixth time this season that over the Spikes welcomed over 5,000 fans to a game. The large crowd saw a slugfest between the Spikes and Muckdogs that lasted exactly five hours, topping the previous record of four hours, 26 minutes set on July 25, 2006 when the Spikes lost to Hudson Valley at home, 7-6. The 14 innings the Spikes played that night were also the most the team played in a single game until Saturday.
-SPIKE MARKS: Rowan Wick was named the NYPL slugging champion over five weeks after leaving the Spikes, as he would still have led the league recording an out in each additional plate appearance to meet the minimum...Wick slugged .815 in 35 games...Kyle Grana and Nick Lomascolo each tied for the league lead in pitching appearances with 27...The Spikes dropped the first game of last year's NYPL Semifinal Series on the road to Jamestown before coming back with two straight wins at home to advance to the NYPL Championship Series...Hudson Valley now holds seven straight wins against State College over the last two years
