State College Spikes - Pittsburgh Pirates (11-9) @ Brooklyn Cyclones - New York Mets (11-9)
Game #21 / Road Game #10 RHP Zack Von Rosenberg (0-3, 6.75) vs. RHP Yohan Almonte (2-2, 3.63)
-SPIKES HEAD TO THE CITY: The State College Spikes continue their three-game road trip to Coney Island tonight with the second game of their series against the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park. The Cyclones lead the all-time series, 9-4, and have won four of the seven games played between the two teams at MCU Park (formerly KeySpan Park). After maintaining a tie for first place in the Pinckney Division with the Jamestown Jammers for the past five days, the Jammers moved ahead last night with a win over Lowell.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes put together a brief rally in the seventh thanks to Matt Skirving and Gift Ngoepe, but the Brooklyn Cyclones were able to build up a lead and hang on to it for a 6-2 win over the Spikes at MCU Park on Thursday night. After going down 6-0 after six, State College got RBI singles from Ngoepe and Skirving, who also contributed two hits apiece. State College starter Tyler Waldron matched his career high as well as a Spikes season high for a starter with five innings of work, but took the loss for his first professional decision. Waldron allowed five runs on ten hits while striking out six, matching another season high for a Spikes starter.
-VON ROSENBERG GETS THE BALL: Right-hander Zack Von Rosenberg gets the ball for game two fo the three-game set at Brooklyn. Von Rosenberg, the Pirates' sixth-round draft pick out of Zachary, LA in 2009, is in search of his first professional victory in his sixth career pro appearance. The righty went four innings in a no-decision last time out at Williamsport, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out a career high four.
-BROOKLYN PUTS ALMONTE ON THE HILL: The Cyclones will respond with right-hander Yohan Almonte on the mound. Almonte has gone to a decision in every start so far this year, alternating wins and losses. On the season, the Dominican righty has struck out 13 batters and walked six, with two hit batsemen over 22.1 innings. Following Almonte, the Spikes may see a familiar face, as left-hander Nelson Pereira, who spent 2009 in State College, is in the Brooklyn bullpen.
