About the Rescue and Recovery Flag of 9/11
In the aftermath of a foreign attack on United States soil, the Rescue and Recovery Flag of Ground Zero has seen the story of thousands of people who came from all over the world to help America start its healing process. This very special star-spangled banner hung over Ground Zero during the rescue and recovery effort following 9/11.
Once FEMA declared Ground Zero a disaster area, they assigned several construction companies to the area for removal of heavy debris, crane use, and safety measures. Charlie Vitchers, employed by Bovis Lend Lease was responsible for the construction crew working with firefighters and police officers in the southwest quadrant of Ground Zero. As the construction superintendent, he put the flag over his assigned area. The flag remained with Charlie at the site until spring of 2002, when Charlie's assignment was completed.
The giant American flag that oversaw the workers at Ground Zero measures almost 20 feet tall by 40 feet wide and weighs 27 pounds. Each 9/11 anniversary, Charlie brings the flag to work, and hangs it at his site for the day. Vitchers says, "Crews always come up to me, and say, `Hey, I remember that flag' and feel proud to have it by their work site again."
The flag was recently at the first public event outside of Manhattan on July 4, 2010. It was unveiled as the centerpiece of the July 4th celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts, considered America's Hometown. In the future, the flag will be displayed at venues around the country honoring the local volunteers who journeyed to New York after 9/11.
