NILES, OHIO --- Justin Miller was 3-for-4 with three runs, one RBI and three triples and the Vermont Lake Monsters used a six-run fourth inning to beat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 10-5 in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Eastwood Field.

Miller doubled and scored in a two-run third inning, then had an RBI double and scored in the fourth as the Lake Monsters took an 8-1 lead. Miller then doubled and scored an unearned run in the sixth to give Vermont a 9-5 advantage after Mahoning Valley had scored four runs in the fifth inning.

The three doubles for Miller marked the fourth time that a Lake Monsters player had three two-baggers in a game all-time. Ed Bady at Auburn in 1995, John-Michael Howell at Auburn in 2005 and Garrett Bass at Tri-City in 2007 are the other three Vermont players to have three doubles in a game.

Vermont put together seven of its 12 hits in the six-run fourth inning. It is the fourth time already this season that the Lake Monsters have scored six runs in an inning. Blake Kelso, Stephen King and Jason Martinson each had RBI singles in the fourth, while Kevin Keyes had a two-run single in his professional debut for Vermont.

Starter Chris McKenzie gave up one run on three hits over the first four innings, but ran into trouble with two outs in the fifth inning. An RBI single, RBI triple and then a Brian Heere two-run homer cut the Vermont lead to 8-5 and chased McKenzie from the game.

Colin Bates (2-0) came on in relief to get the final out of the fifth, then gave up three hits and struckout four over the next three scoreless innings to pick up his second win of the season. Scrapper starter Kirk Wetmore (0-3) allowed seven runs on six hits with four walks over 3 2/3 innings for the loss.

Chad Mozingo was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while King was 2-for-4 with two runs and Ronnie LaBrie 1-for-3 with two runs scored for Vermont (16-5). David Freitas was 1-for-4 with a run to extend his hitting streak to eight games, but the first time in during streak without a multi-hit game.

Dan DeGeorge was 3-for-4 with one run, one double and one RBI for Mahoning Valley (10-11), while Jordan Casas and Chase Burnette both had triples for the Scrappers. The two triples were the first allowed all season by Vermont pitchers.

The Lake Monsters, who are 3 1/2 games in front of Connecticut for first-place in the Stedler Division, will wrap up the three-game series at Mahoning Valley on Saturday. Vermont will then head over to Pennsylvania to face the State College Spikes in a three-game series before returning home on Wednesday.
