-SPIKES COMPLETE THREE-GAME ROAD TRIP TONIGHT: The State College Spikes still hold a lead of 8 1/2 games over Williamsport and Batavia for the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead, and are just a game off the pace for the best record in the NYPL. Tonight, the Spikes finish a three-game series on the road against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field. The Spikes split a two-game mini-series against the Scrappers this past Tuesday and Wednesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Mahoning Valley is three games out of the NYPL Wild Card lead, one of seven teams within that margin of Wild Card co-leaders Connecticut, Brooklyn and Staten Island. State College is 40-44 all-time against the Scrappers, and 15-28 in games played at Eastwood Field.

-LAST GAME: State College Spikes starter Trey Nielsen yielded just one hit and one walk over four shutout innings, but the Spikes fell victim to a late rally by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and took a 3-2 loss on Monday night at Eastwood Field.

Nielsen, the Cardinals' 30th-round draft choice out of Utah in 2013, faced the minimum 12 batters over his four innings on the mound, erasing a first-inning walk with a 1-4-6-3 double play and wiping out a third-inning Austin Fisher single with a pickoff at first.

State College led, 2-0, after five innings, but Mahoning Valley started its comeback when Ordomar Valdez tripled in the sixth inning and scored on Fisher's groundout. In the eighth inning, the Scrappers took the lead for good on a balk and a bases-loaded single by Steven Patterson.

Eight different Spikes collected hits in the game, including four doubles. Collin Radack and Luis Cruz each delivered two-base hits to plate the game's first run in the second inning. State College added to the lead in the third when Alex De Leon singled and an error on the play brought in Nick Thompson.

-McKINNEY MAKES START IN RETURN TO SPIKES: Left-hander Ian McKinney makes his second start for the Spikes tonight as he returns to the team after a successful season with Rookie-level Johnson City. McKinney, who started for the Spikes in the NYPL season's third game and took the loss after going five innings against Williamsport, went 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA over six starts for Johnson City. The lefty was the Cardinals' fifth-round draft choice last year, and earned Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week honors twice while with Johnson City (June 16-22 and June 30-July 6).

-SCRAPPERS SEND SANTANA TO HILL TONIGHT: Right-hander Juan Santana makes his ninth start of the year for Mahoning Valley tonight. Santana has gone between four and five innings in every appearance this year, and has not allowed more than three earned runs in any start. However, the native Dominican has taken the loss in every decision this year, including one against Williamsport in his last outing. Santana gave up two runs on five hits and struck out one over five innings in the defeat. Last year, the righty went 4-2 with a 4.33 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts) with the Arizona League Indians.

-WICK PROMOTED TO PEORIA : The St. Louis Cardinals announced last Wednesday that Rowan Wick, the Spikes' single-season home run record holder, earned promotion to the Single-A Peoria Chiefs. The slugger took just 19 games to break the previous Spikes single-season home run record of 10, set by David Washington just last year. Despite his six-day absence from the league, the Cardinals' 2012 ninth-round draft choice still leads the New York-Penn League with 14 homers, and also tops the league in runs batted in with 38.

-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes lead the NYPL in team ERA with a 3.09 mark, and their 18 team saves lead the league...Alex De Leon is leading the NYPL in runs scored with 32, two more than former teammate Wick...De Leon's 7 homers are tied for fourth in the league...Brian O'Keefe is tied for the league lead in times hit by pitch with nine...Kyle Grana's 13.68 strikeouts per nine innings are second-most among NYPL relievers, and his 39 strikeouts are fourth in the loop......Robelys Reyes has struck out once per 15.22 at-bats, the second-least frequent rate in the NYPL...Nick Lomascolo is tied for third in the league in holds with four...The Spikes lead the NYPL with 39 home runs as a team...Last night's loss was the Spikes' first when leading after seven innings this year.
