Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
FISHKILL, NY --- Hudson Valley broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a run on two walks and two hit batters before Coty Blanchard cleared the bases with a three-run double as the Renegades completed a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 5-3 victory in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium.
The Renegades took advantage of wildness from Vermont reliever Blake McMullen (1-2) to take the lead in the seventh inning on a one-out walk followed by a two-out hit batter, walk and another hit batter to force home the tie-breaking run. Blanchard followed with the three-run double down the leftfield line to cap the four-run inning for a 5-1 Hudson Valley lead.
For the third straight game the Lake Monsters took a 1-0 lead over the Renegades as Max Kuhn tripled home Ryan Huck in the top of the sixth inning. J.P. Sportman cut the deficit in half in the ninth inning with a two-run homer to leftfield for his first professional home run.
Vermont starter Jose Torres allowed just four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over the first five innings, but the Renegades were able to tie the game in the sixth. After back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs, Torres got a strikeout before walking Blanchard to force home Braxton Lee with the tying run.
Yairo Munoz had a two-out double in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, the first Lake Monster to hit in at least 10 straight games since Brett Vertigan had a 17-game hit streak late in 2012 season (B.J. Boyd and Boog Powell both had season-high nine-game hit streaks in 2013). Scott Masik had a first-inning single to extend his hitting streak to eight games, while Ben McQuown and Sportman both had two hits for the Lake Monsters.
Starter Oscar Armenta gave up one ru on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts over six innings for the Renegades, while Kyle McKenzie (1-0) tossed two hitless innings of relief for the win. Blanchard was 1-for-3 with four RBI and Grant Kay 3-for-3 for Hudson Valley (32-13), which is now 19-3 at home this season including wins in 15 of its last 16 games at Dutchess Stadium.
After winning three of the first four games on the eight-game roadtrip, Vermont has now lost four straight games for the fourth time this season to fall a season-high 13 games under .500 at 16-29. The Lake Monsters return to historic Centennial Field on Wednesday at 7:05 pm against the Batavia Muckdogs to begin a six-game homestand. It is Goodwill Industries Night and fans can receive one free grandstand section ticket with a donation of at least one bag of gently used clothing.
