
Pitching Leads Tigers to Victory

Norwich, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (23-22) defeated the Staten Island Yankees (22-23) by a score of 4-1 Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium. With the win, the Tigers and Brooklyn Cyclones are tied for the Wild Card lead. RHP Chase Edwards (4-2) picked up his fourth win of the seasons as he pitched five innings while giving up one run on five hits and struck out a game high five batters.
The Tigers offense grabbed production once again from SS Joey Pankake (3-4) who had a second consecutive three hit performance. Panake had two singles and double along with a run scored. Pankake went 7-for-11 in the series with two RBI's and a run scored. RF Mike Gerber (1-4) put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI single that scored LF Rashad Brown (2-4). Brown chipped in with a two hit performance. 2B Brett Pirtle (1-4) and 3B Steven Fuentes (1-3) each had an RBI in the win.
The pitching from the Tigers was relentless. To go with Edwards five inning performance, RHP Johan Belisario (H, 1) pitched two scoreless innings while giving up one hit and struck out four of the six outs he recorded. Belisario has pitched 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings. RHP Gabe Hemmer (S, 1) pitched two perfect innings in which he record his first professional save of his career as he retired the final six batters of the game while striking out three of them. The Tigers pitching retired the last 11 Yankees batters.
The Tigers travel to Pennsylvania tomorrow for a three-game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters. In game one of the series, RHP Spencer Turnbull (0-1, 3.86) is slated to face RHP Feliberto Sanchez (2-4, 5.90). The pre-game show begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and cttigers.com.
The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League. The Tigers are in their 5th season at Dodd Stadium. Tickets are now on sale!
