-SPIKES HEAD TO WILLIAMSPORT SAWBUCK SERIES: The State College Spikes face their SawBuck Series rivals, the Williamsport Crosscutters in the second game of four straight between the two teams tonight. Historic Bowman Field will be the site for tonight's game, and the Spikes are 0-2 against the Crosscutters in Williamsport this year. Williamsport holds the all-time series lead, 41-36, and a 23-16 lead in games at Historic Bowman Field.
-LAST GAME: Clay Holmes was nearly perfect on the mound last night for the Spikes as he retired the first 14 batters he faced, and the Spikes beat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 7-4, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Jacob Stallings had three hits and a pair of RBIs while Chris Diaz drove in three runs to help Holmes earn his third victory of the year. The 19-year-old Holmes struck out four batters and gave up just one hit in five innings of work. State College took a 7-0 lead through six innings in the game and cruised on to victory.
-CREASY GETS MOUND CALL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Jason Creasy gets the start for State College on the mound this evening. Creasy took the loss against Brooklyn last time out, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings. However, the 2011 Pirates' eighth-round draft pick struck out a season-high six batters over five innings against Vermont in his last outing prior to that, and has a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season.
-CUTTERS TAP PEREZ FOR STARTING ASSIGNMENT: Left-hander Delvin Perez is slated to start for Williamsport tonight. Perez earned the win last time out on Sunday against Vermont, yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out three. The southpaw, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Phillies in 2011 out of Indian Hills (IA) Community College has 10 strikeouts to 20 walks this season.
-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Jason Creasy, Clay Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with one earned run or less this year. Holmes, Heredia and Rodriguez hold three of the the top four earned run averages in the Pittsburgh Pirates' system, and the team's 3.26 ERA is tops in the organization.
-SPIKE MARKS: Barrett Barnes leads the NYPL lead in times hit by pitch with 7, and his ratio of one homer every 22.75 at-bats is fourth-best in the league...Rodriguez has allowed 8.69 baserunners per 9 IP and is fifth among NYPL starters in that stat...Holmes has now allowed a league-best .133 opponents batting average this season, and his 0.94 ERA also leads the league
