State College Spikes News Release
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - In a historic night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, the State College Spikes turned into the State College DiamondDawgs and topped the Williamsport Crosscutters, who played as the Williamsport Bored Apes, 3-2, in the NFT Classic on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
For the first time ever, two teams took the non-fungible token (NFT) space from the digital realm to the baseball diamond. State College's identity came from the DiamondDawgs NFT's created by former Spikes player and current St. Louis Cardinals minor league player Evan Mendoza, while Williamsport's represented the Bored Ape Yacht Club, one of the most prestigious NFT collections.
Each jersey worn by the players and coaches of the DiamondDawgs and Bored Apes highlighted a different NFT in their respective collections, with the holders of those NFT's receiving the jerseys after game.
In addition, a portion of the proceeds from NFT Classic T-shirts on sale at the Spikes' Off the Rack Outfitters team store, as well as the Spikes' 50/50 Drawing for the night, went towards the Little League of Sarasota, Fla., which is Mendoza's hometown.
In game action, Jordan Williams's go-ahead RBI single in the sixth gave the DiamondDawgs (13-18) a lead they would not relinquish. The switch-hitting center fielder, batting for the first time as a righty in the game, lined a two-out base hit to left field to bring in Lukas Cook with the go-ahead run.
State College took the opening lead of the game in the first when an error with the bases loaded brought in Williams. The DiamondDawgs added another run one batter later when Cook drew a walk to score Lyndon Weaver.
After a passed ball in the second put Williamsport (18-13) on the board, Lance Logsdson's two-out double to the left field corner brought in Isaac Nunez with the tying run.
Kiernan Higgins (1-0) earned the win for State College after facing the minimum over two scoreless innings, notching one strikeout in the process. Daniel Harper (2) yielded two hits and a walk but struck out three batters for the six-out save in the longest outing he has made with State College.
Bored Apes reliever J.J. Sanchez took the loss after yielding the eventual winning run on a total of two hits and a walk over his lone inning of work. Sanchez struck out two batters in the effort.
Sunday, both teams return to their previous identities as the Spikes and Crosscutters as they head to Williamsport for a 4:05 p.m. matchup at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. Left-hander Mason Olson (1-0), who is second in the MLB Draft League with a microscopic 0.41 ERA, gets the start for State College, while Williamsport will go with right-hander Easton Sikorski (0-0).
Following the matchup in Williamsport, the Spikes will return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano for a four-game stretch, three against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and one against the Crosscutters. The homestand will be the last for the Spikes in the first half of the MLB Draft League schedule.
Highlights include Old School Baseball Night and Trade-Any-Ticket Night on a Buck Monday, Game Show Night on a $2 Walking Taco Tuesday presented by WOWY, Kids Take Over the Ballpark on a Wine Wednesday presented by Seven Mountains Wine Cellars, and Ag Night on a Thirsty Thursday.
