Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI-The Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League announce that forward Kory Karlander will be participating in the American Hockey League training camp of the Grand Rapid Griffins.

Karlander played 63 regular season and four post season games last season with the Griffins, who are the top affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. The native of Melita, Manitoba had a productive season in Grand Rapids a year ago registering 23 points (10 goals and 13 assists), while adding 83 minutes in penalties.

"Getting our players to AHL pre-season camps is a win-win situation for the K-Wings," said Vice President/General Manager Paul L. Pickard. "For our players, they get to see what it takes to make it to the next level and for recruiting it helps us because players interested in playing in Kalamazoo will know if they do what's expected of them they may get the opportunity to advance to the next level. In Kory's case this opportunity is a chance to get in top shape before starting the season in Kalamazoo."

The 6-1 forward joined the other players invited to the Griffins 2004-05 training camp today for physicals. On-ice practice for the Griffins will commence tomorrow, Wednesday, September 29th at 10 a.m. at the Griff's Icehouse at Belknap Part in Grand Rapids.

Karlander could be back in time to participate in the K-Wings training camp, which is set to begin this Sunday, October 3rd. The first day of camp will include players reporting and participating in physicals and the K-Wings customary fitness testing, which is modeled after the same testing used by the National Hockey League.

Kalamazoo's first on-ice practice of the year will be Monday, October 4th at 10 a.m. in Wings Stadium. Training camp is open to the public and the K-Wings are encouraging fans to come and see their hometown team start forming for the upcoming season.
