Stars Weekly (Week 10) - Stars Continue Strong Home Form, Slip Up on Road

December 3, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Texas Stars News Release

Week 9 Recap:

The Texas Stars began Week 9 with a nail-biting 2-1 win over the Oklahoma City Barons last Wednesday night at Cedar Park Center. Goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp returned to the lineup after missing two games due to injury and stopped 24-of-25 shots to earn his four win of the season. Chris Mueller scored his fifth power play goal of the season and Colton Sceviour broke a 1-1 tie in the third period with his AHL-leading 15th goal of the year.

The Stars then flew up to Western Michigan for their first two meetings of the season against the defending Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena. Rookie Taylor Peters scored his second goal of the year just 2:51 into Friday's game, but Mitch Callahan scored a shorthanded goal, the first allowed by Texas this season, and Riley Sheahan scored three minutes later to make it 2-1 Grand Rapids. Chris Mueller scored a goal for the third-straight game, his team-leading sixth power play goal of the year, to tie the game at two with just 2.1 seconds left in the first period. David McIntyre gave the Griffins a 3-2 lead with the only goal of the second period and goals from Teemu Pulkkinen and Jordin Tootoo put Grand Rapids ahead 5-2 with 3:34 left in regulation. Scott Glennie sparked a late rally with an extra attacker power play goal at 17:52 and 41 seconds later Justin Dowling scored another extra attacker goal to make it 5-4. The Stars once again pulled their goalie and had several chances to tie the game over the final 90 seconds, but fell just short.

Saturday's rematch did not feature such late drama. The Griffins opened up a 3-0 lead by the seven-minute mark of the second period before defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka scored a power play goal at 17:26 of the middle frame for his first career AHL goal. Any hopes of a Stars rally were dashed a mere 24 seconds later when Patrick Eaves scored to regain the Griffins' three-goal lead. Eaves scored again at 8:41 of the third period as Grand Rapids cruised to a 5-1 victory and handed Texas goalie Allen York his first regulation loss of the season.

Week 10 Preview:

The Stars will play three games this week, first completing their three-game road trip on Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Barons at 7:00 p.m. at Cox Convention Center. Texas will then return home for a pair of games against the Iowa Wild at Cedar Park Center on Friday, December 6th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m. This two-game series against Iowa will be the first time the Wild travel to Cedar Park in franchise history, although there are currently 13 players on Iowa's roster who played against Texas last season as members of the Houston Aeros.

This weekend is the team's annual Sing for Santa promotion that kicks off the holiday season. Students from local elementary schools will be signing Christmas carols at intermissions during both games. Friday is another $3 draft beer and $4 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Wine Night and fans are encouraged to arrive early to receive a set of Stars' Hockey Family Car Window Decals presented by Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority. Saturday is a Coke Zero Family Four Pack Night, a Texas Lottery Lucky Row Night and it is the Texas Stars insulated lunch bag giveaway courtesy of H-E-B.

Goaltender Jack Campbell has returned to practice and could return to action this week. Campbell has been sidelined with an injury and has not played since October 23rd when he stopped 24-of-25 shots to beat Oklahoma City at Cedar Park Center for his second win of the year. Texas is currently without the services of the AHL's leading scorer and their tallest player as both center Travis Morin and defenseman Jamie Oleksiak have been recalled to Dallas. Oleksiak made his 2013-14 NHL season debut on Sunday night against Edmonton, while Morin joined the team Monday and will be looking to appear in his fourth NHL game of the year Tuesday night when Dallas travels to Chicago to face the Blackhawks at United Center.

RW Colton Sceviour (15-10-29) leads the league in goals and shots (102), is tied for third in points and has six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in his last six games. C Chris Mueller (9-11-20) is tied for second in the AHL in power play goals (6), is tied for 20th in points and has four points (3 goals, 1 assist) and a +2 rating in his last five games. RW Scott Glennie (3-5-8) has four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in his last four games.
