Chicago, Ill. - In a game defined by goals and lead changes, the Chicago Steel dropped the Lincoln Stars, 5-4, in the Fox Valley Ice Arena on Friday night. Lincoln moved to 8-9-2 this season.
The Steel sprinted to a quick lead making it 1-0 only 23 seconds into the first period. Chicago's Reggie Lutz controlled the puck behind the Stars net before centering a pass to Walker Duehr to take the lead.
Shortly after the goal, Steel forward Johnny Walker took a five-minute boarding penalty that allowed Lincoln to capitalize on the power play. Eero Terî=A4vî=A4inen helped the Stars make it 1-1 with a shot from the point that Sam Sternschein put behind Steel goalie Ales Stezka for his third of the season and fourth point in two games. Christian Evers had the secondary assist.
Lincoln continued its success on the power play in the second with Evers' second goal of the season at 4:09 of the period. Henry Bowlby assisted on the play.
The Stars' one-goal lead held for a flash before Chicago responded at 6:20 of the second with two goals in 66 seconds. With less than a minute remaining in the period, Lincoln equalized with Bowlby's eighth of the season. Gustaf Westlund and Mike Gillespie had the assists.
Steel captain Marc Johnstone scored to take a lead in the third, but the Stars responded again on a two-on-one break that lended Casey Dornbach his third goal of the year. Jake Nielsen had the assist.
With less than five minutes remaining in the third period Steel forward Reggie Lutz finished his three point night with a deflection on the power play to make it a 5-4 final.
Lincoln finished 2/5 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill
Josef Korenar made 9 saves. Cayden Primeau replaced Korenar in the second period and made 8 stops.
