Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Two goals in 16 seconds pushed the Lincoln Stars past the Waterloo Black Hawks 6-4 Friday at Young Arena and into sole possession of third place in the USHL Western Conference.

Tied at 4-4 7:54 into the third period, the Stars' Luke Johnson capped a three-on-one rush with a low shot through the pads of Eamon McAdam. On the ensuing shift, Zach Aston-Reese swiped a puck near the side of the net and slipped it inside the long side post at 8:10.

A deflected Lincoln Stars pass had a fortuitous termination onto the stick of Paul LaDue, setting up the first goal of the night at 2:44 of the first. With McAdam looking for the puck in a different spot, LaDue was able to flip a shot from the slot under the crossbar.

Precise passing allowed the Black Hawks to answer at 12:50 during a power play. After missing a dozen games with an upper body injury, Vince Hinostza started the play along the left wing boards, feeding the disk to J.T. Stenglein, who in turn delivered it to Ryan Papa. The veteran banged it into an open side at the left of Michael Bitzer. Waterloo took the lead at 18:15 during a delayed penalty situation; Justin Kloos' no-look pass from behind the net hit Ian McCoshen between the hash marks. He scored on a low shot through Bitzer's pads.

The Hawks added to their margin 8:53 into the second period when John Wiitala's centering pass was deflected over the shoulder of Bitzer by Tyler Sheehy.

However, the second half of the period belonged to the Stars. Eric Scheid opened the comeback at 12:14, converting a chance created behind the Waterloo net. Then after almost relentless pressure, Dominik Shine scored on a rush back into the zone at 15:47. Lincoln retook the lead at 18:17 during a power play as Scheid cut across the slot and found net to shoot at.

Waterloo tied the score 2:58 after the second intermission, when Brandon Salerno swiped a clearing attempt, setting up a tap-in for Taylor Cammarata. After the Stars pulled back ahead, Waterloo continued to blast shots at the Lincoln net, outshooting the visitors 18-8 in the final period and 43-27 for the game. Bitzer made 39 saves for his 20th win of the season.

Friday was the first of five consecutive home games at Young Arena to close the month of March. Next on the Black Hawks schedule are games against the Fargo Force and Dubuque Fighting Saints next Friday and Saturday. The matchups are part of UAW weekend, with $8 tickets for UAW Local 838 members and their families who show their union identification at the Black Hawks box office.
