SIOUX CITY, Iowa-The shootout woes continued for the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday night in Sioux City as the hometown Musketeers captured a 2-1 win at the Tyson Events Center. Trevor Olson scored the lone goal of the shootout to hand the Fighting Saints its fourth straight loss, and drop them to 3-6 in shootouts this season. Sioux City goalie Kyle Hayton shut Dubuque down in a shootout last Friday, and did the same a week later, stopping all three Fighting Saints he faced.

After a scoreless first, Dubuque opened the scoring with a powerplay goal less than one minute into the game's middle frame. Matt Benning scored his 10th goal of the season for the Fighting Saints at the: 43 mark to make it 1-0. Captain Shane Sooth walked the puck off the left-side half boards and dished it to sniper Peter Quenneville. He unleashed a snap shot from the top of the faceoff circle that was blocked, but the puck hopped to Benning on the back door on the right side, and the defenseman tapped it into an open net.

Sioux City would tie the game later in the period. Dubuque netminder Christian Frey charged out of his goal to play a dump in that ricocheted off the end boards. As Frey fired the puck, a Sioux City player knocked him down and Jake Montgomery intercepted the pass. He gloved the puck down and dished it to Jake Guentzel who fired the puck into the empty net for his team leading 19th goal of the season. Frey's argument for goaltender interference went unheard, and the game was tied 1-1 at 14:42.

In the third period, the game remained scoreless until Sioux City appeared to score with 11.2 seconds left in regulation. However, this time Frey's appeal for goaltender interference was heard after he was crashed into and pushed out of position. The goal was disallowed, and the game went to overtime.

In the extra session Sioux City's Christian Lampasso was awarded a penalty shot late. Frey came up with a huge save, denying Lampasso with his blocker with only 54 seconds to play. The penalty shot was awarded after Lampasso was taken down by Benning on a break down the left wing.

In the shootout, both goalies were up to the task in round one, as Hayton stopped Peter Quennevile's fake slap shot, forehand, backhand deke, and Frey denied Guentzel. In round two, Frankie DiChiara's backhander was stopped by Hayton, and Olson tiptoed around Frey to score the lone goal of the shootout. Hayton denied Benning in round three and the Musketeers captured the extra point in the standings.

Dubuque was outshot 28-21 in the contest and went 1-for-3 on the powerplay. Sioux City did not have a powerplay in the game. The Fighting Saints have lost their last four shootouts and are now 37-10-7 on the season.

Tomorrow the Fighting Saints hope the luck of the Irish is on their side as they go for their lucky seventh win versus Cedar Rapids this season. Tickets are available to Irish Night presented by O'Toole Office Supply by calling 563.583.6880 or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com. Saturday's game will also be televised live on KCRG 9.2 in the Tri-State region.
