Stars Fall to Stampede in Overtime
February 24, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release
Brennan Ali and Jared Mangan both recorded multi-assist games but the Lincoln Stars fell to the Sioux Falls Stampede, 4-3, in overtime on Friday night at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
Lincoln (25-16-3) scored twice early in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and take a one-goal lead but Sioux Falls (17-21-4-3) scored the game's final two goals.
Tanner Ludtke scored for a third consecutive game and stretched his team lead to 24 goals, which is also second-most in the Western Conference. Ludtke's six goals against Sioux Falls are his most against any opponent.
Mason Marcellus moved into a tie for second place among Stars goal-scorers with a goal to briefly give the Stars the lead in the third. Marcellus's 14th of the season was his second in as many games and his 10th away from the Ice Box. Each of his last five goals have been on the road.
Ali carried the puck out of the Stars end and sped into the attacking zone to set up Lincoln's first goal. He found Henry Nelson in the slot and Nelson fired the puck home for his fifth goal of the season. Nelson is now tied with Cole Crusberg-Roseen for the third-most goals among Stars defensemen.
A turnover at the Sioux Falls' blue line set up the game-tying goal late in the first period as Jaksen Panzer got in the way of a passing lane to bat the puck into the neutral zone and then scored on a breakaway with five seconds remaining in the first period.
Ryan Gordon gave the Stampede a 2-1 lead with a one-timer from one knee just in front of the goal line from the far corner at the 10:37 mark of the second.
The Stars scored a pair of goal off rebounds in the third period to take the lead. An Ali shot couldn't be handled by Stampede goaltender Caleb Heil and Ludtke poked home the rebound to tie the game up 44 seconds into the third period. Heil similarly allowed a rebound following a shot from the far boards side by Michael Mesic that Marcellus backhanded into an open cage to put the Stars up 3-2 at the 5:11 mark of the third.
Will McDonough tied the game up at the 11:50 mark on a wrist shot from the left circle off a drop pass from Panzer and then Christopher Pelosi scored the overtime winner at the 3:19 mark of the extra frame. He hopped of the bench and immediately received a cross-ice pass from Adam Zlnka from deep in the Sioux Falls defensive zone, cut up ice and wired the game-winner home from the left-wing side.
The Stars face the Stampede again on Saturday night, this time at the Ice Box. The puck drops at 6:05 p.m. and it's Undie Saturday. Fans are encouraged to bring prepackaged underwear to the game and toss it on the ice after the Stars score their first goal of the game. All donated underwear will be donated to Foster Care Closet. McDonald's ticket packages with four tickets and two sets of prepackaged underwear are available for purchase for $65 here.
