Carolina Mudcats News Release
Huntsville, AL --- Drew Anderson had four hits while former East Carolina standout Sam Narron carried a shutout into the eighth inning as Huntsville defeated Carolina 6-1 on Wednesday night at Joe Davis Stadium.
Anderson, who flew out to deep left field in the first inning, collected three singles and a home run in his ensuing four at-bats to lead Huntsville (12-15) to a tie in the five-game series. Narron (W, 1-0), who spent all season at Triple-A Nashville before being demoted last week, blanked Carolina (10-17) on three hits until the eighth en route to his first win in two starts with the Stars.
Matt Klinker (L, 3-2) suffered his second straight loss, permitting eight hits and four runs over 5 2/3 innings. All of the runs against Klinker scored with two outs, including Lorenzo Cain's inside-the-park home run in the third inning. Cain blasted a ball to deep centerfield, with Sean Henry attempting to chase the drive down, Cain's shot cleared Henry just before Henry ran into the wall and crumbled to the ground. Cain circled the bases as Carson Kainer played the ball back to the infield. Henry was shaken up, but remained in the game until he was ejected in the sixth inning for disputing a third strike. Huntsville added a second run in the third inning on a double by Taylor Green. Anderson's homer occurred in the fifth against Klinker, who was then knocked out of the game in the sixth when the Stars scored a run on three hits, including a single by Narron.
Narron, meanwhile, improved his career record to 56-27 after leading East Carolina to three NCAA regional bids after starring at Eastern Wayne High School. The Goldsboro, NC native fanned seven, walked none, and the run permitted in the eighth inning was unearned thanks to an error by Kevin Melillo at second base.
Carolina had five hits in the game with Jose Castro and Juan Francisco collecting a pair each.
The third game of the series is Thursday night at Joe Davis at 8:00 PM ET with Tom Cochran (2-3, 3.30) scheduled to start against Donovan Hand (8-2, 3.12).
