Stars Announce 2018-19 Basketball Operations and Coaching Staff

SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake City Stars, the NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, today announced their coaching and basketball operations staff for the 2018-19 season. Head Coach Martin Schiller returns for his second season at the helm and will again be joined on the bench by Bryan Bailey and Nathan Peavy as assistant coaches.

Juan Torres also rejoins the team as the Stars' director of sports performance/head athletic trainer, as does Jordan Harding as strength and conditioning coach/assistant athletic trainer for the 2018-19 campaign. Jazz director of scouting Bart Taylor returns for his third season as Stars vice president of basketball operations, overseeing the basketball staff and team personnel.

"We're pleased to have such continuity and consistency with our entire basketball staff returning for a second season in Salt Lake City," said Jonathan Rinehart, who is also beginning his second season as president of the team. "With one year now together, everyone has an enhanced focus on putting a very competitive team on the floor night in and night out and building a strong culture, while remaining committed to our core tenet of providing career development opportunities to players, coaches and staff members."

Ahead of the 2018-19 season, the Stars have also promoted Lowell Egan to director of player services and programs/assistant coach and Nick Reick to director of basketball operations.

Egan is entering his sixth season in the NBA G League with the Stampede/Stars franchise, where he most recently served as director of basketball operations for Salt Lake City. As director of player services and programs/assistant coach, Egan is responsible for arranging team activities to engage player off-court interests while promoting and monitoring player participation in league programs. The McDermitt, Nev., native will also focus on the on-court development of Stars small forwards throughout the season.

Reick served as the club's basketball operations assistant and head video coordinator last season, where he helped support the Stars' coaching staff. Reick, who brings NBA, WNBA and collegiate experience to the Stars, has spent three seasons with the Dallas Wings, most recently as manager of analytics and video coordinator, and has assisted the Chicago Bulls during NBA Summer League. As director of basketball operations for the Stars, Reick is tasked with managing travel and coordinating day-to-day operations, and he will remain the team's head video coordinator.

Rounding out the staff are new additions Shawn James and Jaime Vathielil, who will serve as basketball operations assistants this season. James played basketball professionally overseas for 10 years, including stops in Israel where he was a teammate of current Jazz forward Joe Ingles with EuroLeague champion Maccabi Tel Aviv, Greece with Olympiacos, Italy with EA7, Turkey and Puerto Rico. Vathielil comes to the Stars via the Phoenix Suns, where he served as video consultant (2017-18), and he previously worked as an assistant coach for the Greensboro Swarm (2016-17) and associate director of basketball operations for the University of Miami (2011-16).

Last season, Schiller and his staff instituted a culture focused on player development, coaching Jazz assignment players Tony Bradley, Danté Exum, Naz Mitrou-Long and Royce O'Neale throughout the season. The trio of Schiller, Bailey and Peavy, who worked together in Germany when Schiller was an assistant coach for Artland Dragons in Germany's Bundesliga and Bailey and Peavy were players, dramatically improved the on-court performance of the team over the course of the season. Among the success stories, one of last year's Jazz/Stars two-way players, Georges Niang, earned a full Jazz roster spot this year while Stars roster player Mitrou-Long has been elevated to a two-way player this year (in addition to three NBA call-ups last season).
