Calgary Stampeders News Release

Calgary Stampeders general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that international defensive back Brandon Smith has signed a contract extension. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Smith joined the team in 2008 and has been a fixture at the halfback position with 103 career starts in as many regular-season appearances. In 2015, Smith started 17 games and was second on the team with three interceptions and third with 57 tackles. The Sacramento State product also had eight pass knockdowns and a sack. He started both of Calgary's playoff games and made 15 total tackles.

"Smitty has been an important part of our defence for a long time and I'm pleased that he has chosen to remain with us," said Hufnagel. "He brings stability and experience to our secondary and has proven himself as one of the best defensive halfbacks in the league."

In 103 career games, Smith has recorded 414 tackles to go with 11 interceptions, including one pick-six, 22 knockdowns, six sacks, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. He's also dressed for 12 post-season contests including Grey Cup victories in 2008 and 2014.

"I've been with the Stamps for eight seasons now and I can't imagine playing anywhere else," said Smith. "I'm fortunate to be with such a great group of teammates and coaches and I also appreciate all the tremendous fan support we've received over the years. I'm looking forward to the upcoming season."
