Stampede's Win Streak Snapped in Plymouth

Plymouth, MI - The Sioux Falls Stampede competed hard for 60 minutes, but couldn't stop the explosive and talented U.S. Under-18 squad and fell 4-1 Friday night at USA Hockey Arena. The loss put an end to the Stampede's five game winning streak, but they remain in third place in the Western Conference at 26-11-4. Carl Bergland tallied the only goal of the game for the Herd who outshot Team USA 30-27 on the night. Alec Calvaruso stopped 23 of 27 shots in goal for the Stampede who are still 18-4-2 since December 1st.

The game did not get off to the start the way the Herd had hoped as the U.S. scored just 2:28 into the game when Ryder Rolston sent a pass through the Stampede crease, but it bounced off the pad of Stampede goaltender Alec Calvaruso and into the net. The Stampede came back and created several quality scoring chances, but couldn't get the puck into the net. Team USA extended their lead at 15:49 when Ryder Rolston fired a shot from the high slot that was deflected off the stick of Matthew Boldy and into the net for a 2-0 advantage. Sioux Falls out shot Team USA 10-7 in the period.

The Stampede got on the board 6:04 into the second when Carl Bergland tallied his first career USHL goal. Bergland snuck the puck into the offensive zone and dropped a pass in the slot to Ethan Phillips who fed the puck right back to Bergland who wristed the puck under the crossbar and into the net. The Herd had some quality chances to tie the game, but USA goaltender Spencer Knight made some big stops to keep the Herd off the board again. Team USA regained their two-goal lead at 16:44 when Henry Thurn sent a pass across ice and into the left circle to Patrick Moynihan who one-timed a shot under the left pad of Calvaruso to make it a 3-1 game. Team USA outshot the Herd 10-8 in the period.

The Herd were hoping to make a comeback in the third and some great scoring chances once again, but couldn't get the break they were looking for. All 11 shots were stopped by Spencer Knight in the period as the Stampede did their best to get back into the game. Team USA put the game away for good at 16:27 when Jack Hughes showed why he is considered by many to be the #1 overall pick in the NHL Draft in June. Hughes took the puck outside the right circle and sent a perfect pass across to the front of the goal where Alex Turcotte slipped past the defense to tap home puck into the net for a 4-1 advantage.

Sioux Falls outshot USA 11-10 in the third and 30-27 on the night. The Herd finished the night 0-for-6 while Team USA went 1-for-5.

The Herd continue their five-game road swing on Saturday when they travel to Muskegon to face the Lumberjacks in the first of two games on the weekend. Puck drop is 6:15 PM with pre-game coverage beginning at 5:45 PM on KELO 1320-AM, 105.1-FM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com.
