
Stampede Sending Seven Players to All-Star Game

The Sioux Falls Stampede announced today that a league leading seven players will be attending the 2006 USHL All-Star/Prospects Game, February 7th at 7 PM in Sioux City. Des Moines had five players selected which was second to the Stampede's seven.
The USHL announced the 40-man rosters today at a press conference at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. The Prospects/All-Star Game is selected by the USHL in conjunction with the NHL's Central Scouting System.
This year, the rosters are split up into two different teams: Western Conference and Eastern Conference. In years past, the teams were split into Team World and Team USHL.
The seven players headed to Sioux City include, two-time All-Star Nate Prosser, fellow defenseman Chris Berenguer and forwards Casey Parenteau, Mark Magnowski and Andreas Nodl. The Stampede will also send their dynamic duo goaltending tandem of John Murray and Alex Kangas.
The Stampede have taken home All-Star MVP honors in three of their first six years of existence. Rick Gorman won the award in 2000, Thomas Vanek in 2002 and Jim McKenzie in 2004.
In addition, Stampede assistant coach Doug Schueller has been selected to serve as an assistant coach for the Western Conference squad.
The All-Star Game will also feature a skills competition that will take place at 12:30PM on February 7th and will be free to the public. Also in attendance will be Lord Stanley's Cup, which is given each year to the National Hockey League playoff champion. Here is a look at the Stampede's 2006 USHL All-Stars:
Alex Kangas-Goaltender
Kangas is making quite a splash in his first season with the Stampede. The Rochester, MN native has been one of the top goaltenders in the league all season, captured USHL/LPH Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors twice and was named Itech-Goalies' World Magazine/USHL Goaltender-of-the-Month for December after posting a 5-0-0 record with a 1.00 GAA and a .970 save percentage.
Kangas is currently the top goaltender in the league with a 14-1-1 record, a 1.73 GAA and a .944 save percentage. Last year, Kangas went 23-41 with Rochester Century High School and led his team to the Minnesota State Tournament in St. Paul where he set a state record for most saves in a game with 50.
John Murray-Goaltender
In just his second year with the Stampede, Murray is getting the attention of some of the premier colleges in the country. After spending the majority of last season in a back-up role, Murray has teamed up with Alex Kangas for one of the best one-two punches in the USHL.
The Lancaster, PA was named USHL/LPH Defensive Player-of-the-Week on November 21st and has consistently been one of the top goaltenders in the league through the first half of the season. He finished the month of November with a 4-0-0 mark, a 1.71 GAA and a .939 save percentage. He is currently 14-2-1 on the year with a 2.26 GAA and a .922 save percentage.
Nate Prosser-Defenseman
Prosser has helped build the Stampede up from the bottom of the USHL to the top in his three seasons with the Herd. The Elk River, MN native has been the Stampede's top defenseman the past two years and can play on both ends of the ice. He has been one of the top defensemen in the league in the plus/minus category throughout the season, posting a +20 through his first 33 games while tallying 16 points (2g, 14a) as well. Last season, Prosser finished as the Herd's top scoring defenseman with 24 points (4g, 20a) in 60 games. He will play collegiate hockey next season at Colorado College.
Chris Berenguer-Defenseman
Berenguer has made a name for himself in his first season with the Stampede. After spending last season playing with Sante Fe in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), Berenguer has made a seamless transition to the USHL. He has already secured a scholarship to Northern Michigan University and ranks as one of the top blue liners in the league. He posted 16 points (4g, 12a) and a plus/minus rating of +18 through his first 31 games. Last year, the Eden Prarie, MN native was named to the NAHL "All-Rookie Team" after posting 23 points (6g, 17a) in 54 games with Sante Fe.
Casey Parenteau-Forward
In his second go-around in the USHL, Parenteau is showing scouts and fans that he can play at a Division I level. Last year, Parenteau played Division III hockey at St. John's (MN) where 24 points (16g, 8a) in 28 games for the Johnnies. He spent the 2002-03 season with the Green Bay Gamblers. Parenteau has showcased his ability to pass and score throughout the season, tallying 29 points (6g, 23a) in his first 33 games. The White Bear Lake, MN native has helped anchor the Stampede's top scoring line and led the team in assists throughout the first half of the season.
Mark Magnowski- Forward
A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Magnowksi has brought a flavor of Canadian hockey to Sioux Falls. Acquired in trade with the Green Bay Gamblers prior to the start of the season Magnowski has been the team's most consistent scorer, averaging nearly a point per-game. The 5'10" 180-pound forward was second on the team in scoring with 30 points (15g, 15a) in his first 33 games. Last year, Magnowski registered 32 points (15g, 17a) in 60 games with Green Bay. Magnowski, who has a 4.0 GPA, has committed to Princeton University for next season.
Andreas Nödl-Forward
The Vienna, Austria native is showing flashes of another former Stampede star and Austrian native, Thomas Vanek. Nödl has taken off in his second season with the Stampede, leading the Stampede in scoring with 35 points (21g, 14a) through the first half of the season. He has already registered two hat tricks on the season and was named LPH/USHL Offensive Player-of-the-Week on September 26th. The "Noodle" has registered multi-point games nine times this season. Nödl's (6'1"-196 pounds) hard work earned him a scholarship at St. Cloud State for next season.
