Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-After scoring just one goal in two games over the weekend, the Sioux Falls Stampede exploded for seven goals in a 7-3 thumping of I-29 rival Sioux City Tuesday night before 3,841 fans at the PREMIER Center. The Stampede scored four times in the third period en route to their second win of the season as they improved to 2-3-0. Six different player's tallied goals including, AJ Vanderbeck, who scored twice and, Parker Tuomie, who tallied the eventual game winner in the third period and assisted on another. Stefanos Lekkas turned aside 28 shots to earn the win in his first start of the season.
The Stampede were hoping to get off to a quicker start then their previous three games, but it started much the same as they watched their opponent score the first goal of the game. The Musketeers (2-4-0) grabbed the first goal of the game when Matt Steeves tallied his second goal of the season. Steeves picked up a loose puck in the slot and was able to backhand it through the pads of Lekkas at 6:37 of the first period. The Musketeers would add to their lead at 9:30 when Josh Wilkens scored shorthanded. Wilkens stole the puck and split the Stampede defense through the slot before sliding the puck through the five-hole of Lekkas to give Sioux City a 2-0 edge. It appeared the Herd may have to take that two goal deficit into the first intermission, but the Herd broke through at 14:55, scoring just as a Stampede penalty expired. Josh Passolt intercepted a pass at center ice and sent a pass to Eric MacAdams who skated in on a breakaway and deaked out the Sioux City goaltender, Cameron Gornet, before backhanding the puck into the net to make it a 2-1 game after one.
In the second, the Stampede would tie the game at 4:46 when Csanad Erdely scored shorthanded on a nice pass from Daniel Warpecha up the left wing wall where Erdely riffled a shot past Gornet for his first career USHL goal. The Herd took their first lead of the night at 11:06 of the period when Shane Sellar took the puck from behind the Sioux City net and sent a perfect pass across ice onto the tape of AJ Vanderbeck who blasted a shot just under the crossbar to give the Herd a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. Sioux City outshot the Herd 7-6 in the period.
The Herd were hoping to carry that momentum over from the second into the third, but it was the Musketeers who would tie the game when Matt Steeves tallied his second goal of the game. Just minutes later the Stampede were awarded a power play and they took advantage when Ryan Brushett sent a pass to the top of the right circle for Parker Tuomie who blasted it past Gornet to regain the lead at 4-3. The Herd weren't done scoring in the game as they would add a goal at 15:06 when Lawton Courtnall brought the puck down the left wing boards, cutting through the left circle and around a Musketeer defender before backhanding the shot through the legs of Gornet to make it a 5-3 game. The Herd would seal the game for good when Collin Peters scored an empty netter at 17:45. It appeared that would end it, but the Herd added one more when they got their second power play goal of the night with just 15 seconds left in regulation. Justin Wells found Vanderbeck open in the slot and Vanderbeck danced around the defense and wristed a shot into the back of the net for his second of the night and gave the Herd a convincing 7-3 victory.
Sioux City outshot the Stampede 31-22 on the night and went 0-for-5 on the power play while the Herd finished 2-for-5.
The Herd continue their homestand this Friday and Saturday when they host the Waterloo Black Hawks at the PREMIER Center. Game times are 7:05 PM each night and tickets are available at the PREMIER Center Box Office or any Ticketmaster outlet. On Saturday, the first 1,000 fans will receive a FREE Stampede mini stick, compliments of Schoeneman's.
