Stampede Prevail in the Third

December 28, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Ethan Phillips scored two third period goals to boost the Sioux Falls Stampede past the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-2 at Denny Sanford Premier Center Thursday.

Phillips broke a 2-2 tie at 10:15 of the final frame, blasting in the Stampede's second period play goal of the night at the end of a sequence of quick passes. Less than two minutes later, Phillips eluded a pair of Hawks defenders, cutting to the net to capitalize from close range in transition.

Sioux Falls had recorded the only other even strength goal of the evening on a rebound opportunity in the opening period. Ryan Sullivan stuffed in the second chance after Jared Westcott forced a Jared Moe save at 9:23.

The Hawks rallied with a pair of power play goals in the final half of the first. Waterloo got started during a two-man advantage; at 13:29, Joe Cassetti blasted the puck in off the post at the left of Alec Calvaruso with a try that had originated from the deep slot. Waterloo struck again a little more than three minutes later. James Marooney raced to track down the puck behind the Stampede goal and centered to Emil Ohrvall. Left alone at the top of the crease, Ohrvall stickhandled Calvaruso down and slipped a shot past his right pad.

The Stampede capitalized on the third of their four second period power plays to tie it at 12:26. Jami Krannila rifled his shot past a screened Jared Moe from the top of the right circle. Solag Bakich had prevented Sioux Falls from tying the game sooner, denying a wraparound try by Phillips on an earlier power play near the seven minute mark.

The Hawks squeeze in two final home games before the end of 2018, starting with a Saturday tilt against the Youngstown Phantoms. It's a $2 Coors Light Night. Separately, families of four can enjoy their choice of Hy-Vee brats or mac and cheese, plus four soft drinks, four attack zone tickets, and more as part of the Black Hawks Family 4 Pack for $48. And, it's an OP College Night, sponsored by The Other Place Restaurants; tickets for college students are $9 on game day or $8 if purchased in advance.
