Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders goaltender Alex Stalock has been named Let's Play Hockey/United States Hockey League Defensive Player of the Week. Stalock, 18, earned the honor after stopping 84 of 86 shots in two games last week. Stalock helped the Riders to one point by making 40 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss to the league leading Stampede last Wednesday in Sioux Falls. Two nights later in Urbandale, Stalock made 44 saves to shutout the Des Moines Buccaneers in a 3-0 Rider win. That victory enabled the Riders to move into a tie with the Bucs for first place in the USHL's East Division. "Al continues to do a great job for us," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "He gives us a chance to win every time he's out there." On the season, Stalock leads the league in total saves (829), is tied for the league lead in save percentage (.937) and wins (17), ranks second in minutes played (1519:58), is tied for third in shutouts (2) and is tied for fourth in goals against average (2.21). Stalock has been especially sharp in recent days. The St. Paul, Minnesota, native has now posted shutouts in two of his last three starts. Stalock is unbeaten in regulation in his last five games (4-0-1) and has turned in a 0.98 goals against average and a .975 save percentage during that streak. He has given up three goals or fewer in each of his last ten games, a run that his seen him go 7-2-1 with a 1.57 goals against average and a .955 save percentage. This marks the second time this season that Stalock has taken home Defensive Player of the Week honors. Stalock first claimed the award following the opening week of the campaign. He was also named the USHL's December Goaltender of the Month. This is Stalock's second season with the RoughRiders. He went 19-9-3 with a 2.73 goals against average, a .905 save percentage and one shutout last year. In the playoffs, Stalock backstopped the Riders to the first Clark Cup title in club history, turning in a 7-2-0 record, a 1.44 goals against average, a .950 save percentage and one shutout. The Riders originally acquired Stalock in July of 2004 in a trade with the Sioux Falls Stampede. Stalock will begin his college career at Minnesota-Duluth next season.
