COMING IN

A 3-2 loss to Chicago last Saturday ended the RoughRiders' six game (4-0-2) unbeaten streak. Last Saturday's game was the Riders' third in four nights. The Riders started the week by earning one point for a 3-2 shootout loss in Sioux Falls last Wednesday. The Riders moved into a tie with Des Moines atop the United States Hockey League's East Division by shutting out the Bucs 3-0 last Friday in Urbandale.

The Riders have one game in hand on the Bucs, who fell 7-2 in Sioux Falls Sunday and missed out on an opportunity to reclaim sole possession of first place.

With last Friday's victory, the Riders are now tied with Sioux Falls for the league lead in road wins (14).

The Riders' Chad Costello (19-30-49) scored two goals last week and remains the league's to point scorer. Costello's 11 game point scoring streak (9-10-19) ended last Saturday.

Ted Purcell (12-31-43) has moved past Costello to take over sole possession of the league lead in assists.

Rider goaltender Al Stalock has posted shutouts in two of his last three games. Stalock is unbeaten in regulation in his last five games (4-0-1) and has turned in a 0.98 goals against average and a .975 save percentage during that streak. The second year netminder has also moved into a tie for the league lead in save percentage (.937).

Rider forward Sean Dolan and Indiana forward Aaron Bendickson, who were traded for each other last week, will likely have the first opportunity to face their former teams this Saturday.

An 8-2 drubbing last Saturday at Indiana ended the Gamblers' season best five-game winning streak. That defeat came one night after Green Bay defeated the Ice 3-2 in a shootout on home ice. The Gamblers started the week with a 3-0 shutout of the Steel in Chicago last Tuesday.

The Gamblers are in third place in the East Division, seven points behind co-leaders Cedar Rapids and Des Moines and seven points ahead of fourth place Waterloo.

Green Bay has recovered superbly from a slow start. The Gamblers have gone 15-6-3 over their last 24 games after going just 4-10 in their first 14 outings.

The Gamblers have lost just two of their last ten road games (6-2-2).

Kevin Deeth (12-26-38) is the Gamblers' top point scorer, while Sean Backman (19-14-33) leads the team in goals.

Goaltender Eddie Neville has been an integral part of the Gamblers' hot streak. Neville has started five straight games since being acquired from Omaha earlier this month. Neville posted two shutouts and gave up a total of four goals over four games before surrendering the Ice's first five goals in last Saturday's defeat.

The Gamblers host Chicago tonight.

The Ice ended a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) with last Saturday's victory. The week started for Indiana with a 2-1 loss at Waterloo last Tuesday.

Indiana last nosed above .500 with a win over Tri-City on November 19 that improved its record to 7-6-3. Since then the Ice has gone just 6-12-2.

Indiana is tied for last place overall with Chicago and Sioux City. The Ice is three points behind fourth place Waterloo in the east.

Indiana boasts the league's most effective power play (23.6 percent).

Eddie Del Grosso (16-19-35), Indiana's lone all-star, leads the Ice attack. Del Grosso leads USHL defensemen in goals and ranks second among blue liners in points.

COACHES

Cedar Rapids

Mark Carlson, 7th year (207-148-36)

Mark Carlson has been the RoughRiders' coach since the team arrived in Cedar Rapids in 1999-2000. On December 3 Carlson picked up his two hundredth career coaching win as the Riders defeated Omaha 2-1 in a shootout.

Last season he led the RoughRiders to the first Clark Cup (playoff) title in team history along with a share of the Anderson Cup regular season title and the East Division title.

He has also piloted the Riders to five straight winning seasons and five straight Clark Cup playoff berths. The Riders are one of just three USHL teams to have reached the postseason each of the last five years. The Riders have also advanced at least as far as the Clark Cup semi-finals/East Division finals three of the last four years.

Carlson reached the 150 victory plateau October 30, 2004 as the RoughRiders defeated the Indiana Ice 4-3. He earned his one hundredth coaching win on January 11, 2003 when the RoughRiders defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 3-1 in Sioux City.

He was behind the bench for his three hundredth game as RoughRiders coach as the Riders defeated Indiana 6-5 in a shootout in Indianapolis on October 17.

Prior to taking over the RoughRiders in 1999, Carlson spent four seasons as a collegiate assistant coach at Northeastern and Massachusetts-Lowell. In his playing days, Carlson was a forward at Lowell and was a 1987 draft pick of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins.

Green Bay

Mark Mazzoleni, 2nd year (40-53-5)

Mark Mazzoleni is in his second year in charge of the Gamblers. In his first season, Green Bay went 21-37-2, finished fifth in the USHL's East Division and missed out on a playoff spot by three points.

Mazzoleni took over the Gamblers after spending 16 years as a collegiate head coach, the last five at Harvard. Mazzoleni went 82-72-13 behind the Harvard bench, leading the Crimson to three NCAA tournament berths and two Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament titles.

Prior to taking over at Harvard, Mazzoleni spent five years at Miami (Ohio) University, where he piloted the Red Hawks to an 85-83-20 record and the second NCAA tournament berth in school history.

The vastly experienced Mazzoleni began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Illinois-Chicago (1980-85). His first head coaching job was at Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Points (1986-91) where he piloted the Pointers to three straight national titles. Mazzoleni next spent three years as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Minnesota (1991-94).

In his playing days, Mazzoleni was a goaltender at Michigan State from 1976 to 1980.

Indiana

Dean Grillo, 2nd year (15-21-7)

Dean Grillo took over the Indiana coaching reins last season following the March 15 resignation of Red Gendron. Grillo had previously been the Ice's Director of Player Personnel.

In his playing days, Grillo, a 1991 draft pick of the San Jose Sharks, suited up for the Waterloo Black Hawks in 1991-92 before skating for two seasons at the University of North Dakota (1992-94). Grillo then moved on to the pro ranks with the Kansas City Blades of the International Hockey League (1994-96) and the American Hockey League's Kentucky Thoroughblades (1996-97).

HISTORY

The Riders' Ted Purcell has lifted his team record setting career assist total to 78. On January 13, Purcell broke the old record of 75 assists set by Jon Grabarek. Purcell added his seventy-seventh assist one night later in the win over Chicago. Purcell now has 110 career points as a RoughRider and is on pace to break Grabarek's club record of 129 points this season.

The Riders have gone 38-9-4 on the road between this season and last.

The RoughRiders last season won the Clark Cup, a share of the Anderson Cup and the East Division championship- all firsts in club history. The Riders went 42-13-5 during the regular season- the best record in team history.

The RoughRiders last season set new team records for wins (42), points (89), road wins (24), goals scored (229), power play goals scored (64) and fewest goals against (157).

The Riders last season also set new United States Hockey League records for most road wins and longest road winning streak (13 straight from November 9 through February 11).

2004-05 was the Riders' fourth 30-victory season in the team's six-year Cedar Rapids history. Last season marked the first time the Riders have won 40 or more games.

The Gamblers have missed the playoffs each of the last three seasons. Green Bay last appeared in the post season in 2001-02, when the Gamblers won their fourth straight East Division title.

Green Bay has twice claimed each of the Clark Cup (1996 and 2000), Anderson Cup (1996 and 1997), and junior A national titles (1996 and 1997).

The Danville Wings moved to Indiana after the 2003-04 season to become the Ice.

Indiana was eliminated three straight games in the first round of last spring's Clark Cup playoffs by the RoughRiders.

ALL-STARS

The 2006 USHL All-Star/Prospects Game will be played February 7 in Sioux City. Prospects/All-Star Game participants are selected by the USHL in conjunction with the National Hockey League's Central Scouting Service. In a change this year, All-Stars from the East and West Divisions will play against each other. In recent years players chosen had been split into Team USHL and Team World.
