St. Paul Holds off Rockland in 3-1 Pitchers Duel
August 20, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New York Boulders News Release
(St. Paul, Minnesota, August 20) - The road woes continued for the Rockland Boulders, who dropped their eighth straight on their current trip, 3-1 against the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium in Minnesota. Bobby Blevins allowed just two runs over 6.2 innings of work, but a trio of St. Paul pitchers held Rockland in check to secure the victory. Keith Brachold went 0-for-4 on the night and remains four behind the Can-Am's single-season home run record of 31.
St. Paul struck in the bottom of the opening frame against Blevins. Jim Rappaport worked out a leadoff walk and with one down Willie Cabrera's trickler down the third base line went for an infield hit. After a wild pitch, Ole Sheldon's sac fly gave the Saints an early edge.
Blevins settled in but Rockland was unable to find an answer for St. Paul starter Kyle Hurst, who allowed just four hits in six scoreless frames. The Boulders were able to break through on reliever Chris Odegaard in the seventh on singles by Qualon Millender and Chris Valencia, followed by a Cole Kraft sacrifice fly to tie the score at 1-1.
The hosts wasted little time in reclaiming the lead in the bottom half, as Rappaport led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a Sheldon RBI double. Garrett Johnson was able to escape further trouble but allowed an insurance run in the eighth on Ryan Frost's RBI infield single, as the Boulders remained winless on their current American Association trip. Millender, Valencia, and Ryan Mollica each provided a pair of hits for Rockland.
The road trip continues against St. Paul tomorrow and concludes on Wednesday. After a day off Thursday, the Boulders will return to Provident Bank Park to take on the New Jersey Jackals, running Friday, August 24 through Sunday August 26.
