St. John\'s MacLean Wins Scoring Title
April 7, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA . . . St. John's Maple Leafs forward Donald MacLean has won the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the leading scorer in the American Hockey League for the 2001-02 season.
MacLean, a fifth-year pro from Sydney, N.S., recorded career highs of 33 goals, 54 assists and 87 points in 75 games for the Maple Leafs. He finished the season with a flurry of 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) in his final 13 contests to capture the title.
A second-round draft choice of Los Angeles in 1995, MacLean represented the hometown Leafs at the 2002 AHL All-Star Classic in St. John's. In 277 career AHL contests, the 25-year-old MacLean has recorded 98 goals and 136 assists for 234 points.
The John B. Sollenberger Trophy, which was first awarded in 1948, was originally named after Wally Kilrea, who held the league's single-season scoring record at the time. It was then named after Carl Liscombe, who broke Kilrea's record in 1948. In 1955, the AHL Board of Governors voted to rename the trophy after John Sollenberger, a long-time contributor to the league as manager and president of the Hershey Bears and former Chairman of the Board of Governors.
Previous winners of the John B. Sollenberger Trophy include Zellio Toppazzini (1956), Fred Glover (1957, '60), Bill Sweeney (1961, '62, '63), Yvon Lambert (1973), Paul Gardner (1985, '86), Stephan Lebeau (1989) and Peter White (1995, '97, '98).
Now in its 66th season, the AHL serves as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 75 percent of all players to compete in the NHL this season have been AHL graduates, and over 300 players have taken the ice in both leagues in 2001-02.
The Calder Cup 2002 Playoffs get underway this week, with 20 teams vying for the honor of the league's coveted championship trophy.
