Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings' leading scorer from last season is hoping his success in the Western Hockey League translates to a spot on Canada's national under-18 team.
Michael St. Croix is one of 41 U-18 players from across the country invited to participate in Hockey Canada's selection camp, which runs Saturday through Tuesday at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary. The top 22 players will then make up Canada's roster for the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, Aug. 9-14 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
St. Croix, a Winnipeg native, played his rookie season with Edmonton last year and led the team in scoring with 18 goals and 28 assists in 66 games. He was also picked as the Oil Kings' rookie of the year. The 5-foot-10, 168-pound centreman will be playing on Team Red at the selection camp.
The final Team Canada roster will be named the evening of Wednesday, August 3, and the team will depart for Europe the morning of Thursday, August 4. Canada is the defending champion at the tournament, as they crushed Russia 9-2 in the 2009 final. That team featured Oil Kings defenceman and Buffalo Sabres first-round draft pick Mark Pysyk.
Canada's national men's summer under-18 team is one of two men's under-18 teams that Hockey Canada assembles during each season. A second men's under-18 team will take part in the 2011 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Germany in April 2011, and will be comprised of available players not involved in playoffs with their respective teams.
