Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Ken Carroll made 46 saves and Chris St. Croix scored the game-winning goal late in overtime as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs topped the Corpus Christi IceRays 3-2 Friday night at the American Bank Center. The Mudbugs are now 17-11-1 overall and 12-2-1 in games decided by a single goal this year.
After tying the game at two in the second period, the âBugs were outshot 16-6 in the third but got to overtime thanks to a number of big saves by Carroll. St. Croix then finished off the win with his second goal of the year with only 47 seconds remaining in overtime. Shawn Limpright and Tyrel Lucas scored the other goals for Bossier-Shreveport, who ran its road point streak to seven games.
Neither team had many quality scoring chances early in the game before Shawn Limpright put the Mudbugs on top 1-0 with a shorthanded goal. Limpright intercepted a pass at the blueline and raced in on a breakaway before beating Kevin Nastiuk to the glove side for his eighth goal of the season at 14:16. The IceRays tied it just over a minute later on the same powerplay when Chad Woollard ripped a long shot off the post and into the net. Then with just 46 seconds left in the period, Matt Smyth's long slapshot found the top corner past a screened Ken Carroll to give Corpus Christi a 2-1 lead after one.
The âBugs came up with a gritty penalty killing effort early in the middle frame, killing off 1:44 of an IceRays two-made advantage with only two defensemen at their disposal. Bossier-Shreveport then tied the game on the powerplay a short time later as Tyrel Lucas got a pass from Brett Smith in the slot and rifled home his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-2 after two periods.
The IceRays controlled much of the third period, but the Mudbugs hung tough as Carroll came up with numerous key saves. The teams traded chances in overtime before St. Croix skated in with Justin Aikins on a 2-on-1 break before burying the winner past Nastiuk's glove side to give the âBugs their 17th win of the year.
Ken Carroll improved 8-5-0 with the big performance in goal. Kevin Nastiuk made 27 saves in defeat for the Rays. The âBugs converted 1 of 5 powerplays, while the IceRays scored once in seven chances. The Mudbugs were outshot 48-30 in the contest.
The Mudbugs will now return home to host the Missouri Mavericks on "Guns âN Hoses" Night tomorrow at 7:05 pm at the CenturyTel Center. The âBugs are 1-0 against the Mavs this season after a 3-2 win in Bossier City back on November 28. Group ticket packages and mini-plans are available through the Mudbugs office at 752-BUGS, while individual tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at 741-9700.
