Chesapeake Baysox News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - The Bowie Baysox fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3 Saturday night in Richmond. With the loss, the Baysox fall to 75-65 on the season and remain tied with the Harrisburg Senators for second place and the final playoff position in the Eastern League's Western Division with two games to play. If the teams finish the regular season tied, they play a single game playoff Tuesday, Sept 7, at Prince George's Stadium.
Baysox starter Eddie Gamboa allowed the first three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Brock Bond led off with a single to left field and designated hitter Conor Gillaspie launched his eighth home run of the season to left field. First baseman Sharlon Schoop followed the home run with a single to right field and moved to third when right fielder Juan Ciriaco singled to right field with two outs. Second baseman Nick Noonan plated Schoop with a single to center field before Gamboa induced a ground out to end the inning.
Bowie answered with a run in the top of the second inning. Designated hitter Joel Guzman lifted a double to center field and advanced to third when first baseman Joe Mahoney singled to right field. Catcher Caleb Joseph drove Guzman in with a sacrifice fly to cut the Richmond lead to 3-1.
Second Baseman Ryan Adams tied the game in the top of the third inning. Left fielder Danny Figueroa poked a two-out single into right field and scored when Adams launched a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left field, tying the game at 3-3.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning. After the rough first frame, Gamboa threw five scoreless innings, holding the Squirrels to a total of three runs on eight hits and a walk through 6.0 innings with two strikeouts. Baltimore Orioles right-hander David Hernandez relieved Gamboa to open the bottom of the seventh inning and struck out all three batters he faced.
Left-hander Chad Thall took the hill for Bowie in the bottom of the eighth inning. He walked third baseman Brad Boyer to open the inning and threw a wild pitch with one out that allowed Boyer to take second base. Thall struck out Schoop for the second out of the inning, but center fielder Clay Timpner lined a single into right field, plating Boyer and putting Richmond in front 4-3.
Right-hander Brandon Cooney relieved Thall after the single and threw a wild pitch that allowed Timpner to move to second base with two outs. Cooney worked out of the inning when Ciriaco grounded out to end the inning.
Bowie faced Richmond reliever Ronnie Ray in the top of the ninth inning. Ray closed out the game, retiring shortstop Carlos Rojas on a fly out and striking out center fielder Xavier Avery for the first two outs. Catch Steve Lerud pinch hit for Figueroa and struck out swinging to end the game.
The Baysox play two more games against Richmond to close out the regular season. The teams play at 5:05 p.m. Sunday evening and 12:05 p.m. Monday afternoon.
