TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Bowie Baysox will meet in game two of a four-game series...The Baysox jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage and held on to defeat the Flying Squirrels 5-3 in the series-opener on Friday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Jake Stevens gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Making his
third start of the season...Suffered the loss in his last outing at Erie 8/30...Allowed two runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings...Struck out four batters and walked one...Both runs allowed came in the first inning as he gave up three straight hits to start the inning...Retired 11 of the next 13 batters that he faced...Recorded five fly outs and two ground outs...Threw 75 pitches, 47 strikes...Thew 28 pitches in the first inning...Added to the starting rotation 8/25 in place of David Mixon who was placed on the TI list due to the birth of his daughter...Prior to this season, hadn't started since 7/22/07 at Winston-Salem while with Advanced-A Myrtle Beach...Is 2-3 with a 2.19 ERA in 25 appearances, including two starts, since giving up a season-high five runs in 2/3 of an inning 6/6 at Trenton...Has allowed 13 runs, nine earned, on 30 hits in his last 37 innings (25 games) while striking out 22 batters and walking 14...Opposing hitters batting just .222 (30-for-135) against him over that stretch...Posted a season-long 10 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings streak 6/17-7/8...Left-handed batters are hitting .155 (13-for-84) against him this season...Named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star...Selected by the San Francisco Giants from the Baltimore Orioles in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft 12/10/09.
Right-hander Eddie Gamboa gets the nod in game two of the series for the Baysox....Earned the win in his last outing against Altoona 8/30...Tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits...Struck out six batters and walked two...Outing was his longest of his career...Had gone six innings five times...Is 4-1 with a 3.91 ERA in 10 starts this season with Bowie and opponents are batting .292 against him...Was 3-4 with a 3.50 ERA in 25 appearances out of the bullpen this season with opponents batting .219 against him...Is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in eight appearances, including two starts against Richmond this season...Has allowed six runs, five earned, on 17 hits in 18 1/3 innings against the Flying Squirrels with nine strikeouts and eight walks...Entering the season, hadn't started a game since making 12 starts in his pro debut with Rookie Bluefield Orioles in 2008...Went 1-7 with a 3.63 ERA in his 12 starts in 2008...Selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 21st round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of California-Davis.
ATTENDANCE WATCH: The Flying Squirrels enter play today trailing the Reading Phillies for the Eastern League lead in total attendance by 15,826...Richmond needs to draw 22,446 fans over its final three home games in order to top Reading in average attendance...The R-Phils lost two home openings due to weather while the Flying Squirrels lost just one.
THE DON JUAN: Infielder/outfielder Juan Ciriaco is 4-for-7 (.571) over his last two games with a double, triple, home run, four RBI and two runs scored...The 27-year-old had just eight extra-base and seven RBI in his first 43 games with Richmond.
GOLD BOND: Infielder Brock Bond has hits in each of his last seven contests...The 24-year-old is 9-for-31 (.290) with two doubles, a triple, three RBI, and seven runs scored over his last seven contests...Bond's season-long hit streak is nine games which came 6/16-6/16 while he was with Triple-A Fresno.
ATTA BOYER: Infielder Brad Boyer matched a season-high with three hits and two runs scored in last night's series-opening loss to Bowie...It was the second three-hit game of the season for the 26-year-old and his fourth game with multiple runs scored.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal is third in the Eastern League in doubles (40), is fourth in hits (153), and is fifth in total bases (231)...He leads the team with 43 multi-hit games...The 23-year-old is one double and seven hits away from matching the career-highs he set last season with Advanced-A San Jose...Ten of his 12 home runs have been hit on the road...Since 6/1, Neal is batting .312 (101-for-324) in 85 games with 29 doubles, nine home runs, 45 RBI, and 52 runs scored...He has raised his batting average from .255 to .291 over that span.
CATCHING ON: Catcher Tyler LaTorre is 13-for-42 (31%) in throwing out base runners since Jackson Williams' promotion to Triple-A Fresno 7/1...He was previously 2-for-20 (10%) throwing out base runners.
Z-PACK: Catcher Eliezer Zambrano has hits in each of his last four games dating back to his last game with Low-A Augusta 8/15...The 23-year-old is one game shy of matching the longest hit streak of his career since making his domestic debut in 2007...He is 5-for-14 (.357) over that stretch with two doubles, and two runs scored...Zambrano had a five-game hit streak with Arizona Rookie League Giants 8/13/07-8/27/07.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 165 double plays in 138 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The Flying Squirrels have not gone more than three games without a double play this season...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Left-hander Clayton Tanner allowed four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3 innings...The 22-year-old finished the season going 2-3 with a 5.50 ERA over his final seven starts while striking out 20 batters and walking 18...Opponents hit .338 (47-for-139) against him with six home runs over his final seven starts.
