Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (27-29) held off the Reading Phillies (29-26), 6-4, to earn a series-win in the finale of a three-game series in front of 8,387 at The Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

The day didn't start well for the Squirrels as Reading lead-off man Freddy Galvis started the ballgame with a bunt-single. Making an attempt to cut down Galvis, Squirrels' starter Daryl Maday threw wildly past first base. The error allowed Galvis to move to second base. He advanced to third on a fly out from Niuman Romero and scored for a 1-0 Reading lead on a bloop-single to right-center field from Matt Rizzotti.

The Squirrels wasted no time in leveling the ledger, stringing together three consecutive singles to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Jose Flores got Richmond started with a one-out single off of Reading starter B.J. Rosenberg. Johnny Monell followed with a single, and Roger Kieschnick evened the game, 1-1, with a single to left-center field.

Richmond obtained the lead for the first time in the third inning with a two-out rally against Rosenberg. The righty issued a walk to Flores, and Monell followed with a double to bring Flores around from first base for a 2-1 advantage.

Rosenberg again found trouble in the fourth inning, as Kieschnick opened the inning with a single. Rosenberg then walked Nick Noonan to put two aboard. An attempted sacrifice-bunt was unsuccessful from Juan Perez, with Kieschnick forced at third base on the play. However, Ryan Lormand drilled a ground-rule double over the center field wall on one hop to score Noonan, and the Squirrels held a 3-1 lead.

The R-Phils caught up in the fifth against Maday. Michael Spidale pinch-hit for Rosenberg, and started the frame with a single. Galvis followed with a double to put runners at second and third with nobody down in the inning. Romero contributed a sacrifice-fly to left field, and Rizzotti flared another single into left field to tie the game, 3-3.

Rosenberg didn't factor in the decision, departing after four innings. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out three.

Richmond regained the lead against Rosenberg's replacement, right-hander Tyson Brummett, in the sixth inning. Brummett opened the door with a one-out walk issued to Noonan. A batter later, Lormand clubbed his second RBI double of the ballgame to left field, putting the Squirrels back in front, 4-3. Pinch-hitting for Maday, Sharlon Schoop extended the lead to 5-3 with a single into center field.

Maday (2-4) earned the win over six quality innings. He allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits. He walked three and struck out six in his second victory of the year. Brummett (2-3) was saddled with his third loss of the season, conceding a pair of runs over three innings.

Reading tried to creep back into the ballgame with a run against Edwin Quirarte in the eighth inning, but the Squirrels answered in the bottom of the inning. Lormand notched his third hit of the ballgame, driving home his third run of the day to cap the scoring against Reading right-hander Jordan Ellis.

The Squirrels are off on Monday as they travel to Portland, ME, to open a three-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox). The series-opener is slated for 7:00 PM on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. LHP Clayton Tanner (1-5, 4.47) will make the start for Richmond. Portland has yet to name a starter for Tuesday's game.
