Squeaking out a Shootout Win

The Waterloo Black Hawks trailed much of the way on Friday night, but the Hawks forced overtime against the Lincoln Stars before pulling out a 3-2 shootout victory at Young Arena.

Lincoln recorded their two goals in the first 14 minutes of action. Brad Morrissey notched the opener on a quick flick in transition at 8:34. Travis Treloar added another at 13:42, stopping quickly in the left circle to dodge a defender before firing his chance to the top corner.

Waterloo drew within one during a power play with 18.5 seconds remaining before intermission. After the puck was stuck in the right corner for nearly a dozen seconds, Griffin Ness pushed it to Luke Bast above the faceoff dot; the Hawks defenseman snapped his try past Jacob Mucitelli.

The second was scoreless, despite the Stars spending seven minutes on the power play, due in large part to a head contact major penalty against Keighan Gerrie. Waterloo hung with the Stars and denied their 14 shots during the middle 20.

Wyatt Schingoethe tied the game with just over ten minutes remaining in the third. Bringing the puck from behind the net, he lifted a chance from the right circle under the crossbar from nearly the same position where Bast had scored in the first.

Waterloo could not convert a late third period power play, and overtime sped by quickly without a goal. The best look came on a Lincoln two-on-one rush as the extra time was melting away. Dominic James connected with Ty Glover, but Hawks goalie Gabriel Carriere tracked the pass and soaked up Glover's shot just before the horn sounded.

For the night, Carriere made 34 saves.

The only successful shootout attempt came on the final try during the three-round tie-breaker. Kyle Haskins came through the left circle and flipped the puck over Mucitelli's right shoulder to lift Waterloo to the win.
