Springfield Cardinals News Release

Midland, TX - Celebrating the Nations' Independence Day, the Springfield Cardinals opened up a three game series in Midland against the RockHounds.

After the Cardinals went quietly in the top of the 1st inning, the RockHounds wasted no time getting on the scoreboard against Nick Additon. The lefty would walk Archie Gilbert and hit Adrian Cardenas with a pitch with one out before retiring Jeff Baisley on a line out to center. Alex Valdez would step up and line a single to left to drive in Gilbert to give Midland an early 1-0 lead.

Springfield's offense would not get their first hit until the 4th inning, but they made it count. After Adron Chambers and Tony Cruz started the inning with walks, Matt Carpenter sacrificed them both 2nd and 3rd. Steven Hill would come up and line the first hit of the game for the Cardinals into left field to tie the game 1-1.

Midland would regain the lead in the bottom of the 5th without getting a hit against Nick Additon. After a lead off walk, a hit by pitch and two wild pitches put runners at second and third with one out, Jeff Baisley lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score JC Holt to give the RockHounds a 2-1 edge. Additon would exit the game after the 5th inning allowing just the two runs on three hits while striking out two. Blake King would come in for the Cardinals after Additon and throw two scoreless innings to keep Springfield close.

In the 7th, Springfield would get a lead off double from Andrew Brown to get the inning started. After a strikeout, Tommy Pham delivered an RBI single to right field to score Brown to tie the game 2-2. It was Pham's first career hit in Double-A.

Springfield would threaten in the 8th as Tony Cruz singled and went to second on a throwing error with one out. But Matt Carpenter struck out and Steven Hill grounded out the end the inning keeping the game tied 2-2.

Adam Reifer would relieve Blake King out of the Cardinals bullpen in the 8th and would throw two perfect innings to send the game into extra innings.

In the 10th, Jose Garcia led off with a single, but was forced out at second base on a fielder's choice from Adron Chambers. Chambers would not wait around at first as he took off and stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Petey Paramore. Tony Cruz would follow Chambers with a sacrifice fly to put the Cardinals up 3-2.

Francisco Samuel would come in for the bottom of the 10th and would walk the lead off batter to begin the inning. After a ground out advanced the tying run to second base, Samuel buckled down getting a ground out and a fly out to left in foul territory to earn his second save of the season in the 3-2 win in extra innings.
